GE heavy duty 18 set

Wow, congratulations, Brian! Nice set, you will love them.

As I mentioned in many other posts, my mom had that set in Avocado. Someone mentioned the washer is a real workhorse, and it is. So is the monstrous dryer.

If I recall that dryer drm in over 7 cu ft. Competitive even today, but probably the largest residential dryer in the universe back then. i remember the dryer made the washer look small, when they were side by side, even the the washer is normal dimensions. My aunt saw my mom's new machines and commented on the "small" washer, ha.

The straight vaned agitator works well. But from having the curved vaned myself and observing both in action I can tell you the turnover is better with large loads with the curved vane. With less than max loads the straight vane does just fine

If you are going to use these as daily drivers and don't mind not keeping the washer as it came out of the factory, you could probably buy a curved vane and replace the straight vane.
General Electric's Filter-Flo's are great at de-linting your load. No lint filter is easier to clean. Usually the lint ends up balled up on the filter pan. Just grab the balls with your fingers or use a paper tower.

Someone also mentioned the sounds. Yes, I agree GE must have done sound studies. ha. Their appliance sounds are strangely rhythmic, soothing and comforting. My mom said her GE washer sounded just like her grandmothers wringer washer and brought back long lost memories.

That particular dryer, as I remember my mom's, is quite quiet. Not thumping or ultra annoying like my Speed Queen/Amana dryer.

I love the flip switches, more than the push buttons. It give you more combination/permutations of speed and temperature options.

Checkrate/Likes 7 Hi all I am new to this site and on Monday picking up the GE set of my dreams. I have searched for years for this and was wondering if any one could give some tips on things to look for before putting it into lite use.Unfortunately it does not have the mini basket or filter but hopefully will find those down the line. Checkrate/Likes 2 *cant wait to clean and wax* If you really want to make them gleam and remove light scuff marks use a very fine automotive polishing compound (by hand only) before waxing.

Checkrate/Likes *BEAUTIIFUL SET* Those are real beauties! They are also real strong workhorses! If I remember correctly, the straight vane agi's in these were good, but with a full load, was a little weak in The turnover dept. Again congratulations, as the set Filters better then anything else out there. Not to mention the great sounds associated with GE's. Happy Washing David

Checkrate/Likes 2 *Update and Thank you* Hi all so after I made my post yesterday the lady messaged me and said that many people wanted them. She told me that if I wanted the set to come right away and get them. I was able to get my brother and went wow what a project bringing them down a flight of stairs but to my surprise sitting on the shelf above was the filter. Well it was worth it for sure paid 90.00 for them. Found out the washer was made in Jan 74 and dryer in Nov 73. Also wanted to say Thank you for the responses.

Checkrate/Likes What a lovely find! The washer is lots of fun. I have had a couple of GE dryers of this vintage before and remember they tended to run really hot so be careful! Checkrate/Likes Don�t those GE Americana dryers have multiple heating elements for different temperatures? I remember seeing one in a post from a few years ago and from what I remember it runs the lower wattage heating element on low, just runs the higher wattage element for medium, and both lower and high wattage elements on the high temperature setting.

Checkrate/Likes *I've always been a fan of GE* ever since I had the filter-flo set with the ramped activator and minibasket and filter pan. I love the sounds they made from the splashing on small water lever level to the loud clunk and the spin cycle. My favorite speed has always been normal. I love how normal speed agitation starts up as well as the loud suspension on spin along with the cabinet thundering.
