I saw a post with a pic of a Maytag dryer; the words Heavy Duty were on the machine. Made me remember my mother always insisted her washer and dryer were labeled as "Heavy Duty". Did that really make a difference or was it just a marketing tool?

Marketing, for all the brands.  As I recall from John/Combo52 some years ago, those were stickers that dealers put on the machines.  Other brands touted their machines as "heavy duty" and Maytag wanted to get on the bandwagon.

It’s also interesting to note that Maytag seemed to drop labeling of any kind on their machines from the early 60s on as regards “automatic washer,” etc. When I look at my collection, my Amana, GE, Wards, Whirlpool and Sears all tout “heavy duty” yet Maytag doesn’t state anything...

When I bought my Maytags in 1984, I asked the owner of the appliance store I bought them at and he said everyone knows Maytags are Heavy Duty and they dont need to say it. But the next model change did say Heavy Duty under the logo.

My GE filter-flo

I believe was a heavy-duty model. My post-filter-flo set had heavy-duty on the features section.
