O my god

Its harvest Gold. Awesome !!
What do you think that is maybe 1972 ish?
Congrats. where did you get it?
Do you have the lower kick panel?

Panels

roto204's profile picture
The panels are off because when I found it, it had a bad water valve (dry-cleaning with dishes never really caught on), a leak where the top spray-arm hose met the pump, and a bad belt (it looked like a Twizzler that had gotten permanently shaped like a stretched oval, and it broke a few minutes into our initial testing).

After a few hours of pulling the cabinet (FUN), fiddling with worm-gear clamps, and swapping valves, here she is in all her harvest gold glory (and you can be sure it will be repainted).

The bottom kick-panel's off because of service needs and the fact that it'll be repainted soon anyhow. (And because I'm lazy.)

The bonus? It's flawless inside. Yay! Not even any goo under the door.

LOL

Sorry, Erik. Harvest gold's on my hit-list :-) I can respect the color, though.

I found it at a thrift store here--got a two-for, because I also snagged an old D&M Kenmore from which I pilfered a pump, a new wash arm and upper assembly, and racks for the Magic Chef. Yay!

Here's a pic of the D&M--there's nothing left inside, unfortunately :-)

More Maytag

Love that lower wash-arm, and the self-cleaning filter that really works. Owning this will be an interesting comparison between the Magic Chef and the KUDS-22 Superba we had before.

Year of the Maytag

roto204's profile picture
I'm not sure, actually, Erik--Roger hypothesized that it may be closer to '78 or so. This is my first one, so I'll have to do some homework :-)

That 1977 D&M Kenmore was my first DW from Goodwill. I think I paid $20, it was avacado but the butcher block or laminate top was missing and the hose end had been cut off. aparently someone "converted" it to undercounter. It was 1981.

Well sorry to hear of your distaste for harvest gold. In my opinion- what is the point of having a 1960s,1970s,or 1980's dishwasher if it isn't a color. Plus it is authentic Now.
The underneathe is like prisine. You would expect some rust especially right under the door. And yes the innards are like flawless. No mold or food deposits on the door edges. What color is it destend to be? Will you paint it or have it sent out to a shop?

Well before you do the deed, can I ask you please, could I get a pic of it with the front panel installed and a pic of the back. I know I know, just bill me.

A lucky for you to get 2 for one, that can really make the day.

A Magic Chef ??? What year?

Nate, I guess gold is what pink is to me. I've never seen that particular style of "tower" in a maytag, always the later model version, not one like that and apparently with only one water slit. Congratulations. Once functional, will this replace the Tragic Chef with the BobLoad Challenge option?

Nate, I would htink it's mid-70s at best. It's stil the more "original" style exterior than the later style. It has what I call, the "GE-esque" timer dial. Maytags are cool!!!

Hey Nate, Roger told me all about this neat machine. I am so happy that you were able to save her. Terry

Beautiful Maytag - you will love the way this cleans. You'll be talking in all caps while it's running though, it's a freight train for the kitchen! Roger is probably right about the date, it's pre-drying fan, post 1975 for sure with the belt-drive pump.

Nice shot of the center tower too!

I think Sears must have sold one billion + of that model, it was a very popular price point for a not-so-bad dishwasher...

OK, who was the MFG with the Power Tower in the dishwasher? Was it Maytag or Jenn Air?

I like the ""GE-esque" timer dial" comparison.

One of my first Ge DWs was the BOL GEs built-in with the thin black plastic console and the knob "floating" in the front panel.
It was avacodo, metal tub, and no energy saver dryer switch.

I liked the sleek console but it was like why would the timer knob be randomly floating. whether it is maytag, Ge, or KA from the 60s with a timer knob in the lower access panel. I always though it kind of odd.

Thanks, guys. No, I don't have a problem with harvest gold per se, so long as it's in someone else's kitchen. :-)

It is destined to become a dark grey, but I will put the panel back on it and take pics while it is still in its (*urp*) sunny hues.

Greg, I'm so looking forward to testing this dishwasher with a load of horrific dishes. We did a test piece the other night at Roger's, and it did a fantastic job. I'll have to bring over the jar of peanut butter and start smearing away. It is noisyish, but in that charming "I'm kicking butt" kind of way :-).

Terry, we were excited, too! It was one of those days where a random vibe called you into the thrift store :-D I don't usually bring home two dishwashers at a time, but this was an unusual case--a perfect parts machine right there with the perfect next-generation dishwasher :-)

Bob, we're contemplating moving soon, so the Magic Chef (with TurboBob™ setting, and nice, new racks) will likely stay behind. The Maytag will become our future built-in. The water tower actually has multiple slits; the lighting of the camera makes it look like there's just the one.

The floating timer dial is like our GE that we evicted from the apartment--and yes, it was delightfully harvest gold as well. It was also as loud as the Maytag, only unlike the Maytag, that whole cleaning thing didn't seem to happen.

Erik, if you look under thread 8435, "BobLoad in the Magic Chef...it can be done", you'll see pics of the D&M Magic Chef in all its glossy glory :-)

And in the meantime...

roto204's profile picture
The timer does a fun trick whereby the water valve kicks on and off intermittently when it's washing. I'm not overly concerned--I think the overflow protection would kick in if things really got crazy--but it's one of those things that drives you crazy, and it also undermines the integrity of the machine to the appliance-unappreciative :-).

So, that's next on the list of things to do, but yes, first is to reassemble panels and snap more pics for you :-).

adds water during main wash??

If it is adding water a few mins into the main wash portion of the cycle for about 10-15 seconds, that is completely normal. Every belt driven Maytag I ever used did that.

Post# 160937 , Reply# 17   10/17/2006 at 16:12 (6,394 days old) by mikepaquette ()
Direct or belt drive

Am I correct that the direct drive is more quiet? Also in the early direct drive does it have the same racks ? I would love a TOL direct drive with those racks. Mike

Really??

roto204's profile picture
Trok, that's interesting. The thing is that it's sporadic about when it does it. Sometimes yes; sometimes no. I first noticed it in the rinse cycle the second time we ran it, but now it does it periodically all the time--just little bursts. Runs for a second, shuts off. A few seconds later, another short burst.

It seems weird and more like a flakey timer, but alas, I have no basis for comparison...

Mike, yes, the direct-drives are considerably quieter, but Greg and Brent can tell you more about that :-)

I also have had a few experiences with Maytag and I know that they do that with the fill. I had a rental property that had a maytag from like the 80s and it started and I thought there was a problem as well. It also seemed to make alot of noise. I thought that the motor was bad. I was a fairly deluxe model from some time in the 80's.
GEs are not quietest either. The cheap sound insulation can make a difference.
What I have done on occasion is buy some of those 2' x 4' fiberglas backed ceiling panels and staple them to the inside of the cabinet space before installing the dishwaser under the counter. That doesn't help much with the noise from the front though.

Cool picture links Nate. thanks for the lead on the Magic Chef thread.

Nate, some friends here used to have a mid to late 80s belt drive (I let it go when the got rid of it cuz the belt broke). It used to do the water quick add inadvertantly thing off & on too. Now in your case, I THINK this is one of the "tags that prettty much doesn't have a timed fill, but a pressure-switch determined water fulfillment design. Maytag used to have in their literature the dishwasher worked regardless of water pressure. That also may have something to do with water needing to be added once all the sloshing and stuff got going.

Post# 160987 , Reply# 21   10/17/2006 at 20:17 (6,394 days old) by trok_99 ()
Bob is right.

Maytag did advertize a metered fill...and it was different from those of other dishwashers...but only that the fill time was extended...it was still timed for the most part. It would not sit there if it didn't get enough water. But the flow was unrestricted and if it filled in 45 sec's it would just wait out the fill time after the float was satisfied.
But I am positive that belt driven Maytags added about 10 seconds of water prior to opening the detergent dispenser in the main wash, about 2-3 minutes in.

Very cool Find!
You will have lot's of fun with this great Maytag!
Do tell us when you use it if the Timer "Chunks" while going through the cycles.
Are you going to build this one in? Or are you going to use it as a portable? Play with it awhile with your Magic Chef. It is so much fun to have two dishwashers. You will be shocked at how soon you fill both of then during the week.
If you do decide to build it in, save the outer casing and parts.
You will be stunned at how much these cases are to buy, if you can find them. Also, it is cool if you want in the future to convert another built in into a portable.
Thanks for the pictures.
Your Maytag Looks great! Brent

Oh please

converting a built-in into a portable.
Actually I switched the places with 2 Kenmores. One a late 70s computer control portable model with a 1982 BOL built-in. literally taking them apart, taking the tubs out of their respecive frames and switching them.
There is a certain feeling of satisfaction, for sure, but you look back and wonder, what wss I thinking. lol. It was fun. and they worked.
