My 1960 washer started making loud rhythmic knocks for around 30 seconds during agitation, then stopped. So, underneath, when I pull the belt from the pulley to the motor, correct direction, the pulley turns and the shaft, the wig-wag does not move at all. Inner tranny problems, I'm guessing? I did a complete rebuild on this machine maybe 6 years ago, no troubles til now.

The wigwag mounts onto the protruding shaft of the sector gear, which oscillates whenever the transmission is driven, in either direction.  Failure of it to move pretty much indicates an internal transmission problem.

Photos of the inside of the transmission from the photos in my Whirlpool repair master manual from around 1962.

More than likely it is an internal gearcase issue but I would make sure the wig wag is still secure. Maybe the screw fell out or is not in the hole at the top of the gear sector shaft.
