Our TR5 which was previously 'repaired' for a clunking from a loose tub pulley nut (P/N 29220). The tech tightened it but less than 4 months later its loose and knocking again. Turns out there's an updated torque spec on the nut from speed queen in a bulletin (the tech told us this when he was here last time), but it didn't dawn on me when he was trying to tighten it with an adjustable wrench, supposedly he doesn't have a torque wrench... He just "tightened it up". This is the same machine with the belt noise I posted about, but due to covid we're holding off dealing with that. I really don't want him in the house again especially since he didn't do a proper repair 4 months ago. The bolt loosened back off to hand tight.

Is it possible for me to the torque spec for the tub nut bolt from the speed queen bulletin? I'm an auto mechanic and have a snap on torque wrench good up to 250 FtLbs, and it does torque + angle if that's required too. I really don't care about the warranty at this point as this tech doesn't even have the tools to fix it and no one else around here services them. Please help!

Hi Keith, SQ sugests lighting the 1 1/2" nut to 700-1000 inches torque, I would also add some lock-tight to the nut threads.

You can either do this through the opening in the base pan or remove the motor and use a wrench with a pipe extension.

If you call SQ you can probably get them to send you a new belt while you are at it to see if that stops the belt sound.

THANK YOU JOHN!!

John,

Once again you are invaluable. I can’t thank you enough for providing me that torque info. And after rereading the post I said Nut and in the next line I said bolt....Im glad you were able to follow the confusion. I was mulling over loctite as well but wouldn’t do it if you didn’t think I should. My plan is to go though the bottom of the machine to access the nut. Seems the easiest without removing a bunch of stuff (and creating more issues). The belt noise I can deal with if speed Queen requires a tech to come out. We’ll wait till after Covid and have the guy back out. I’m sure he can handle a belt change without a torque wrench (???) lol. He’s very knowledgeable, and knew the issue right away, but apparently doesn’t have the tools required for this job, which surprises me. I was a little disheartened that he just winged it the first time.
I even bought a service manual with diag codes and flowcharts hoping it would have torque specs but it does not. At least I have it for reference in the future!

I really owe ya!

Thanks again for your help!
Keith

Nut retorque complete!

Just to update,I retightened to 80ft lbs (960 InLbs) with loctite blue on it. Fingers crossed under torquing was why the nut backed off after 4 months. Did it through the bottom of the machine, 1 1/2” socket and torque wrench, and used a box wrench on the tub shaft flats to keep the tub from turning. Tight quarters but I was careful not to hit anything. Worked like a charm!
Big thanks again John and all the members of the forum for helping people like me out! It’s super appreciated!

Keith
