Found this video which shows some (not all) of the internal functioning of a direct-drive transmission, in agitation and spin.

It does not show functioning of the neutral drain components (which are under the white spin gear), or the shift action to engage or disengage the agitation shaft.

The spin gear is shown rotating during agitation, except briefly when the fellow grabs and holds it still via the pinion gear.  The spin gear is not actively driven during agitation, the rotation is from a bit of friction from another gear beneath it, upon which it sits.  The basket drive pinion is restricted from rotating during agitation by (indirect) engagement to the basket brake, which then prevents the spin gear from turning.

Note that a part of the agitation components is driven to oscillate during spin (and neutral drain), but does not engage to to the agitator shaft.
