Are you going to bid for it? I've used one of these, they were great weren't they! I loved the way they kicked into a slow spin then sped up to a faster one. They were quiet indeed.

Good luck

Rob

yeah I agree, only went wrong after 15yrs or so, and my mum thought it looked dated so we got the Bosch Maxx, and as soon as I ran the first cycle, I was like "where's the water!!" lol

You're not forgetting, Richard.....

The 1000 model had three more option buttons under those three, giving a bank of six. I really loved these machines and apart from the great sounds and splashiness (especially on program 6)I really liked the big viewing door and the drum was a cool design. The programmers were very `snappy' if I remember right.

Am tempted to bid, but in e-bay language `small electrical fault' could mean either a burned out motor or simply a blown plug fuse!

Nick

Induction motors

Yes, they had induction motors, and just varied the amount of poles I think according to the spin. You either got a 400/800 or a 500/1000, but it was a `true' speed, as opposed to other machines around at the time like a Candy which used centrifugal clutch. Those Candys were fascinating to watch on spin - the machine would be spinning at 400 and making a cetain `tone', then sudenly you'd hear something mechanical going on, the machine would shift up to 800 but the motor would still be making the exact same tone. Fascinating to watch from the rear how it was done. (??)

Anyone own one of these `brown fascia' Candys? They were not bad machines, my landlord in London still had loads on the go in his rental properties back in 2001.

Nick.

didnt your mum have one? My Nana (paternal) had the 1000 rpm model. The programmer was very clicky as were the buttons. They always struck me as very gentle at washing. Only about 45 rpm on cotton. I love the drum too. They used to give a faint wooo noise on the spin ramp up i remember. When the motor went, boy did it stink the kitchen out. My mums LG makes a kinda philco noise as its a Direct drive. Not my favourite machine but id have one to remind me of Nana. Nick.

my mum had one from 88. Yes i remember that spin thing well but never saw the motor at work. I was 8 when it died. She had the 1000rpm model with vari temp. Basic machine with only half load button. The other 2 were on off and door release. Shame the bearings went. Was i good washer. The first washer we had i remember loads about. Water level were a a little higher than your 79 Hottie Nick. But not much more.

My grandparents had a 1000rpm bendix with 6 buttons and 2 dials. I forget the model. I spent many a day, month and year infront of that machine. When i was tiny it would keep me quiet while my gran rest her soul, used to wash up or start dinner. As i got older it became an after school thing, weekends & holidays treat to look forward too & there was always a load waitin 4 me...:D

My grandad took it with him to newcastle n when he moved back up after my grandma died, and that was the last i saw of it :( lol. Can anyone remember the water levels on rinses? I think they were high but im old now n forgetful lol.

Darren

Candy on Ebay

Richard, so sorry you can't get that machine. Like NickUK I'm tempted myself but I think it's a bit far from where I live.

NickUK I found this on Ebay although, I think it's a bit later than the machine you are talking about.

Regards

Rob

the rinse levels were about 4 inches up the door. Maybe 3. But not hoover logic style. They were economical for the time.

Bendix

chestermikeuk's profile picture
Hi Guys, Are these the machines you mean??

The Bendix was one of the most popular washer dryers because of the induction motor and it was sooooo quiet...
I just pulled out the "Record" by Valerie Singleton of Blue Peter fame with the baby on the front, will record it later...

Nick, was this the Candy machine you meant??, never knew that about the clutch/speed/thingy.. I remember (I know, ancient!!),their new campaign
in the 70`s, "Candy Formula Stainless & Innox", the one with the Pear Shaped Drum, apparently was the for-runner to the Zanussi style Wash Sump,

Thanks Mike and Nick...

Mike thanks for that, it's always great to see these things. That record sounds interesting.

Nick, I thought of you when I saw that Candy was in Cheshire. Wasn't sure if it would interest you. I take it you didn't get the Hoover Electron?

Here is another Bendix pic

Candy Turbomatic

The Candy Turbomatic shown above: I used to have one. I picked it up from the roadside, it had been thrown out as the dryer fan was rusted out. The washing function still worked perfectly. I gave it to my partner's sister who used it for several years, it was her first front loader and she loved it.

The motor had an expanding pulley which gave a substantial increase in spin speed. At tumble speed the pulley would be contracted so the belt sits low between the two pulley halves. When it engages spin, the centrifugal weights would be thrown outwards which forces the two pulley halves closer together, squeezing the belt towards their outer diameter thus effectively doubling the pulley size. Thus a simple two speed induction motor which would normally give 400 rpm spin, gives 800 rpm which was pretty good for its time. It was very well engineered so that when it first started to spin the accumulated water in the drum loaded up the motor and it didn't get to the speed required to operate the expanding pulley, so it spun slowly at first. As the last water was pumped out, the motor would speed up a little and the centrifugal pulley would kick in, speeding up the drum to a blistering 800 rpm. The expanding pulley works the same as a CVT car transmission, the technology was first seen in the Daf Variomatic, a marvellous little Dutch car which was released in 1958. They were never sold here though I have seen one private import. The Candy washers were never sold here either -I guess the one I scored was thrown out because the dryer fan was not available here.
A lovely machine.

Chris.

Yes Mike that was the exact machine - cheers for that!

Gizmo - thanks for the fantastic explanation -you write superbly.

Nick - that would be a lovely machine to own, looks in good cond, but can you still get the parts?

The one insane thing about those Candy machines, at least the two machines I used, was that the fabric softener dispenser was a fake - as you poured the conditioner in, it just ran down into the machine straight away - there was no compartment as such with a back to it, only a pretty flap thing over the whole `lie' to deceive you. Ingenious! But not very good. And why, why, why ???!!!

that would explain why mum used to run a seperate rinse and spin cycle after for softener. The drawer had 4 compartments in hers. Pre main softener and bleach. The bleach and softner cover was brown plastic. Well i was explainin to Jon, if i get in uni for next year i wont need my own washer for 4 years. I cant afford the storage as i intend on workin as little as possible. I get a hefty bursary so i want to chanel everything into study. Good career or good washer collection? Tryin to weigh up lol.
