We have a Maytag Porta-Washer Model A50. It was my mother in-laws and we have original operations instructions for it. We were wondering if we should sell it? We are in the Chicagoland area. Thanks for your help.

Hello,
Is the Porta washer fully functional? Someone will buy it from you I'm sure.
What is the color?

The color is a dark gold color the knobs are white. I am sure that it is in good shape and working as she only used it for her "delicates" and washed all the other clothes in the full size washing machine. I will have my husband move it to a spot where I can take some pictures and post them. Thank you Electronicontrl's for your reply.

Pictures of Maytag Porta-Washer A50 For Sale

These are the pictures of the washer. It is dark goldish in color and it has always been kept upstairs and not in the basement. There is no rust and the washer is in perfect shape. We have the original operating manual for it as well. Hoses look in good shape and flexible no rot. We have not hooked it up to see how it works but we think it should be fine since it was Mothers pride and joy and only used for washing her delicates. We are looking to sell it. We live in the Chicagoland suburbs. Must pick up we will not ship.

Hii Linda,

Thank you for the photos, it looks to be in very nice condition.

FYI, the gray hose inside is the fill hose for the washer, the smaller white-ish hose with what looks like a shower head at one end does not belong to the washer.

One thing you should do is plug it in and turn the wash timer (to turn on the motor) and see if the gray rotors/impellers in the wash tub turn. This washer has a very unique drive belt which can break due to being 45-50 years old, but especially if it sat unused for years. This drive belt is NLA (no longer available) and a custom drive belt must be made in order to use the washer portion.

I’m in California so I’m not interested in buying it, but what price do you think you want for it?

Regards,
Kevin

Kevin,
Thanks for your input. I will do that tomorrow and see if it works. To be honest I have no idea what it is worth. Do you have an idea? We just thought that it was something a collector may want.
Thanks,
Lindy

Hi Lindy,
That's a nice machine. Looks like Mother took good care of her things! I recall someone in the Chicago area selling a white A-50 for $50 some years ago.
Searching Craigslist or FB Marketplace might help.

Belt

I had a fabrication company in East Los Angeles make a new belt for my A50. (Thank you Revvinkevin!)

It was somewhat inexpensive (I don't remember exactly, but I think I paid $20 or $30 to have the belt custom made) and the washer runs like new.

Best of all, the diverter valve is INTACT! (Knock on wood)

Somebody sent me a private message but....

...due to an AWO system failure, I was unable to reply.

Robert, when I replied the message it showed an error screen "wrong time zone America/Los Angeles"

Anyway, for the person that messaged me asking for information regarding the company that made the belt for the A50, here it goes:

Mechanical Drives & Belting
Madsen Electric
2915 East Washington Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA 90023
(323) 263-4131
Fax: (323) 269-2033

For the A50 washer they made
PN 5815036
Fenner Fab
Orange 85 5/16" x 49-1/4" o-ring
Eagle Fabricated Belt

Obs. Sometimes (very rarely, but it happens) the belt slips and falls from the pulley. If I had to remake it, I'd make it 2mm smaller.

I don't know the specs for the matching dryer belt.

I hope this can help you.

Niles - north side of Chicago

This Maytag A50 porta washer is in really nice shape - most of the plastics have not yellowed and the paint is in really nice condition.

If it were a few minutes drive I'd save it - hopefully someone in the Chicago metro will.

Location

We are located in Niles, Illinois. The closest largest landmark would be Chicago O'Hare airport. Hope this helps.

Update about Maytag Porta-Washer A-50

Some people asked if the impellers turned. We did plug the washer in and the motor works but the impellers did not turn. We have the original Operating Instructions for the Maytag Porta Washer model A50 but the only they only give 4 steps directions if your Maytag appliance doesn't work.

1.Aviod the expense of unnecessary service calls by checking that the appliance is plugged into a live electrical outlet.-- That the circuit breaker is OK :replace fuse or reset circuit breaker if necessary.--- That the controls are properly set; reread these operating instructions if necessary,
2.Call your MAYTAG Dealer's service depart or the service organization he recommends.
3. Write to: Service Department
The Maytag Company
Newton, Iowa 50208
4. Write to: Major Appliance Consumer Action Panel
20 North Wacker Dr.
Chicago, Il. 60606 or call 800/621-0477

I just found these instructions so refreshing and straight forward to compared to todays complex instructions that come with our appliances that I just had to share them. Hope you enjoyed them as much as I did.
Thanks

Did you turn the wash dial to a minute setting?  If you don’t do this the impellers won’t move.  Have you tried the spinner yet?  If you close the lid and pull the lock shut on top the spinner should start up.

If the impellers don’t work when you set the timer you may need a new belt.  Reply #7 gives info on obtaining a replacement belt for your A-50.

Eddie

Belts

Belts for these machines and matching dryer can be obtained at very reasonable prices at McMaster Carr Co. I bought several to have as replacements if needed for both machines.
