Well, after many years of looking I finally found a Maytag 806 that was in good condition, was close by, and was reasonably priced.

I just dragged it home yesterday, so I will be posting my own photos, but in the mean time, here's the seller's photos from Facebook.

Can I ask someone in the group to look up the date of manufacture from the serial number?

Thanks for the date of manufacture, here's the skinny:

Ben: Thanks for the date of manufacture, this means that although it's an 806, many desirable features have been deleted - the tub lamp and the "intelligent bleach dispenser" for starters.

BACKGROUND: I only paid $80 for it so I'm not complaining that it doesn't run correctly. It was just one county over and easy to load, and that really makes all the difference. It was in the hands of a "salvage kid" who hauled away garbage. This 806 was on the way to the scrapper from the original owners when he put it up on Facebook on a lark. It was up less than 12 hours when we made an agreement. I wasn't the first to reply, but I was direct and the earlier contacts were coy and non-committal.

WHAT"S WRONG: The good news is the machine holds water, agitates, varies speed and the timer advances as it should. The bad news is there's evidence that the tub has thrown water/suds into the cabinet. Of greater concern is the spin cycle. I tried to get it to spin three times, and each time the transmission would make 5-6 revolutions then there was a faint "pop" sound coming from the motor and it would stop. I'm pretty sure that was an overload in the motor kicking in but an experienced opinion would be welcome. There is a good deal of powdery scale on the motor frame, and I haven't checked if the motor is free to move back and forth in the mounting.

COSMETICS: The porcelain top and basket seem in good condition. Button graphics are worn, but the glass face is in good condition. My biggest cosmetic issue is the right side of the cabinet which has black scuffing.

MISSING PARTS: There are some missing small parts missing, including the fabric softener cup, cabinet clips, screws etc. When I have a more complete inventory, I'll post in the Market section of the website.

HAPPY ENDING: I first got into antique washers when I was living in Palm Springs in the 90's. You were tripping over these Maytags they were so common. My first purchase was from a Charity Store right around the corner: a Harvest lower-end W/D set. The Washer leaked immediately and I ran that to destruction, but the Stream of Heat Dryer I kept. Now, twenty years later she has a mate again.

Any comments are welcome.

Bill

Are you running the washer on an extension cord? Maytags don’t like that. My initial thought.

"pop" sound coming from the motor

Motor is overheating. If it agitates but won't spin the motor is not the issue.

Something is binding the tub or the tub bearing is seized.

Probably needs a new tub bearing and stem seal kit.

A 43 year old machine with a lot of hard miles on it is going to need some work.

Sounds like a good find! It's had some rough treatment, but all of the "important" things seem to be there.

The failure to spin could be as simple as something caught between the inner and outer tub. I had the same problem with my A209 - it ended up being two separate socks jamming it up.
