It SHOULD have been a 2-speed.

That is a 2 speed machine unless it has been modified.

The speeds are built into the cycles on the timer.

Well the reason I ask is that we had a 60 series kenmore growing up they had basically the same cycles and options but the more traditional console layout with the option knobs on the left. I thought it was odd that they would sell basically the same machine with two different console styles and was just trying to figure out if there where any other differences.

Cameron, I had friends from church who had the washer you described you grew up with. the times I was around it, seemed like it was on gentle more than fast agitation. It was a monochromatic white console.

when the first ones came out, most were single speed, and usually 1 or 2 cycles....but the one speed showed issues of clothing damage...

in later years, the "Normal" cycle changed to a lower speed agitation....note this machine has a Normal cycle, with Gentle/Knits incorporated into this portion...

as well as a Heavy Duty cycle for high speed across the board...

Around the start of the 60s, single-speed washers started having a SHORT cycle for delicates, alongside a NORMAL one. Starting c.1980, single-speeders had a PERMANENT PRESS I, while two-speeders had later had PERMANENT PRESS II.

2 Speed Kenmore....

Heavy Duty FAST agitation and FAST spin
Normal SLOW agitation and FAST spin
Perm Press SLOW agitation and SLOW spin

I’ve used this washer. Not bad if slightly under loaded on Normal Cycle
Heavy Duty of over loaded will SHRED your clothes! Lol

The one we owned had cotton sturdy(high/high) permanent press (high/low) and knit delicates (low/low). It did not have the slow speed step down on the normal cycle. I don’t remember excessive wear being an issue, but it’s hard to say it’s been a long time ago and I pretty much wore 2nd hand clothing anyways growing up. I’ve been doing my own laundry as long as I can remember, I always filled it up with water then added the clothes as it was agitating to always make sure there was good circulation.

Well this machine popped up on Facebook marketplace, it’s the same machine with the same options but a different console layout. The one we had growing up was very similar to this, the cycles were probably the same they just were called slightly different things.
