With the classic dolly/hand truck inflicted front cover scars.

Highly doubt that. It's over 50 years old and button wear indicates hard long use.

What's up with no timer increments for a normal wash cycle?

Hi Ralph, The normal cycle starts at 10 minutes, in the photo its at the 6 O'clock position.

Ralph, early 06 washers only had a "normal" wash cycle as well as a soak cycle. The 806 had the visible pre-wash cycle. Then right after that was the soak cycle that was typical for a lot of Maytags. It wasn't until a couple of years later that Maytag redid their timer layout with the addition of Permanent Press cycle. This being the earliest of 806, the "speed buttons" to the right of the timer were Normal, Wash 'n' Wear, and Delicate. The WnW was normal agitation and slow spin. There were also only 3 water level buttons even on the largest capacity such as this one.

Thanks John.  A second look after reading your post revealed the usual increments.

Besides this machine's questionable condition, it seems less desirable -- at least to me -- than later 806 models with more wash/spin speed and fill level options.

Is it the camera and/or lighting, or has the metallic blue paint across the bottom of the console faded or been removed entirely?

I think you're seeing that correctly.  As Dan pointed out, this is a well used washer. The blue paint has probably worn off.

It all comes down to what you're after... There is some elegance to the simpler dial on the pre-permanent-press models, and the chrome trim is a nice touch. If you get too late in the production, you lose things like the tub light, so there might be a sweet spot in the middle...

Oh yes, I agree 100%.

It goes without saying that this rare machine could be very much appreciated by collectors, which is why I phrased that comment about this particular 806 model as I did.

My main complaint about these earlier 806's is that a slow agitation/fast spin combo isn't an option, a selection I frequently use. Besides a more restrictive 3 level water switch and shorter 45 second spray rinse.

Tub lights were around until late '75 and a timed bleach dispenser disappeared in early '75.
