Hello all!

Took delivery of my pink maytag, it has a broken part for the wringer. I cant figure out how to disassemble the wringer portion to get it there. Here are some photos of what Im dealing with, it agitates very well but the wringer wont work. Would anyone trust a handyman or local company to help? Im down in Orlando, FL

Check the wringer cap...

Hey Zachary,

The top cap may be in the "tension on" or locked position. Perhaps a silly question, but have you pressed the release bar? The cap should just lift off; there are two round vertical rods that align the top cap into place. There may be a taper pin preventing the cap from being removed entirely; if so, just remove the pin and lift the cap off.

It appears you have a rather major oil leak on your hands. There have been numerous threads about this, so if you use the search function on the forum, you'll come across a lot of useful information.

A complete tear down and rebuild of the transmission is the only long term guarantee. Here's a detailed thread of that process: www.automaticwasher.org/c...

The wringers on these EJN machines are pretty complicated. I've done some minor repairs but nothing too involved. They are much more complex than the gray ghost machines of the 20's and 30's, that's for sure.

Maytag itself back in the day told service/repair persons to simply replace wringer heads that required extensive service. Have sets of original service/repair manuals for Maytag conventional washers covering entire range, and that is advice given pretty much across the board.

Maytag's opinion then was repairs that basically called for taking apart wringer head and rebuilding just weren't worth time and effort for service persons, and certainly cost (as in what would charge owner of machine) compared to just buying a new wringer head.

Someone was selling a huge lot of NOS Maytag wringer parts including heads here in group awhile back. Another member also stated a shop he worked for or knew also had NOS wringer heads they were looking to move on.

If you want to have a go at repair or at least diagnosing service and parts manual for your Maytag wringer are available for download in library section of forum.

Oil leaking is common for Maytag wringer washers. Depending upon how bad things are machine can run for months or years with loss of lubricant or even just "crud" in transmission. Maytag built these washers to last and withstand an incredible amount of abuse.

If washer at some point was moved incorrectly and or tipped down wrong way that would have caused oil to leak out as well. There are many extensive and explicit discussions here in group on Maytag wringers, transmissions, oil and how to cope.

Unlike wringer head while it does involve a fair amount of effort getting to transmission, cleaning it out and putting in new oil is comparatively simple. Again library has all necessary parts and service literature detailing what must be done.

Highly recommend Bunker Hill Appliance in Ohio - 1-330-893-3700

They are Amish who have likely forgotten more about Maytag wringers than many others ever knew. They do parts and service for these machines, but if you live outside their area you'd have to arrange how to get things to them and back.

Being Amish they don't do internet, so you'd have to call and see what there is by speaking directly.

Bunker Hill Appliances buys, refurbishes and sells Maytag wringers so there is a good chance they may have an entire wringer head assembly to sell. That or you can ship yours down for repair.

According to what have read or heard from those who service or serviced Maytag conventional washers common reason for damage to wringer head is users sending things that are too thick through.

While Maytag wringer washers self adjusting mangle can cope with surprisingly various items, there are limits.
