Hello all -

I have about 11 washing machines, the newest is a pink Maytag wringer washer...most of the others are turn of the century manual washers. I just purchased a National Vacuum Washer from 1924. Does anyone have a safe way to remove the gears ? I read that heat and a proper size punch would work but I don't want to damage the parts. I can restore without removing the gears but it will be much harder. I attached pictures of the gears in question as well as a few pics of some of my washers.
Thanks

Welcome and congrats on new project.

If cannot get answer in this group suggest reaching out to Lee Maxwell at Olde Wash, he's rebuilt many ancient to old washing machines and may have an idea on what you're after doing.

I once .....

worked on a wall mounted drill press from this era with gears that looked very similar. The gears slipped over a shaft and a taper pin was driven in to hold the gear. On opposite sides of each gear you may see this pin. If it is a taper pin, the ends will be of different diameters. If this is the case, use a punch and tap the smaller diameter side of the pin and drive it out the opposite side. No heat required.

Thank you

I did contact Lee at OldeWash and he answered right away...what a nice guy.
He said pretty much the same as you sfh074.....patience and a brass hammer
and the right size punch...he said he rarely had to drill them out.
We'll see what happens....
thanks
dave

Cant help you out with this thread but I'm also in ohio, columbus/cinti and if you are ever interested in a kitchenaid 17 model or 18 let me know. I would like to find a home for one of my 17 suburbas especially as I have too many. I also rebuilt an 18 superba last year but dont want it anymore. 17 model would need a restoration, have never even looked at 5 or 6 of the ones I have.

My email is in my member profile.

Thanks. Pete
