I am trying to convince a friend to stop doing all cold water washes.  I am trying to find a good photo of what it does to your washing machine over time and no matter how I search here I'm not finding a good one.  Can someone send me a good example?  I want to shock her into using hot water once in a while.  LOL.

Thank you.  I know I'll get some good ones.

All cold water and too little detergent, keep in mind you can wash quite well in cold water if you use enough detergent for the water temperature and hardness and soil level.

These pictures are from a service call yesterday, the washer stoped running and was flashing a full code.

All the socks etc had fallen over the tub cover from careless use [ and bad washer design ] that allows things to fall over when loading and unloading.

A pair of Victoria's Secret panties got wrapped in the motors cooling fan and ripped the speed sensor of the motor, luckily I was able to remove the motor and reinstall the sensor and get it running without any expensive parts. The main bearings on this 5YO machine already sound like a freight train when this washer is spinning.

She told me she does only cold water washes, uses the downy pellets along with the detergent and then Bounce dryer sheets.  Oh my!  And we all know she's not alone.

i am no expert but base on analysis the problem is atc temp

pierreandreply4's profile picture
i am no expert but i can say with today washers compared to vintage machines the problem is atc temp control that mix hot and cold water makes warm water more like cool water than warm same for hot water that more like warmwater since base on normal cycle on modern washers of today cools down water unless washer has an internal heater to keep water at actual wash temp pic is an exemple of a washer with true wash rinse temp no atc control

Several toploaders, mostly WP/KM DDs.

#14 is an (at the time) 11-yo Norgetag that belonged to my aunt.  She has better habits and they added a water softener to the house at some point of owning it.

What brand of washer did you work on that had this issue?

Cold water washing.. the main area might look clean, but the inside is nasty and it stinks!

Whats the point of saving a few pennies on hot water when you have to send the washer to landfill way before its time?

The thought of using cold water to wash underwear etc makes me want to vomit.

I think the lowest temperature I have ever used is 30c can't recall what I was washing but no doubt it said cold on the label.... To avoid shrinkage just buy the next size up or get pre-shrunk clothing.

Eww to nasty washing machines and smelly clothes may as well bash them on a rock by a river.

Thanks for that pic. That is exactly what happens.
Pierre, your machine looks like trash still because of all the years of previous damage you caused with cold washing.
My grandparents have a 12 year old LG FL. They generally use Normal-Warm. They have a fair bit of buildup, and inevitably some dark mildew spots. All machines, but FLs in particular, need occasional hot washes.

Pierre,

What's going in the area between the arrows?  Mold?  Presumably the boot isn't torn there or you'd have leaking.

F&P IWL12 from 2004, shot taken this past September after I bought the machine.

While I did clean the washer in the basement my wife complained of the stench up in the kitchen. The most fowl smelling washer I have yet to clean.

the funny thing is the cold water brings problems, and then when people start using fabric softener, in the cold water, it gets even worse!
fabric softener kinda congeals when its cold, so it just forms a waxy gummy coating on everything and its just nasty. bet it smells terrible.

Ben, there is a tub clean cycle on IWL models (and most other F&P models) but of course no one ever runs it.

Post# 1117901 , Reply# 16   5/21/2021 at 13:10 (1,064 days old) by Egress (Oregon)

the tub clean cycle takes an hour and a half on our LG. we pour some bleach into the bleach dispenser, and run the water in the sink until it gets hot. start the cycle, and tada. washer smells fresh all the time. we haven't had any issues with mold or mildew yet either, despite having a front loader.

F&P IWL tub clean is 3+ hrs.  It runs a full fill with tap-hot water, strongest agitation profile, 2-hr soak with intermittent agitation, more agitation after the soak, two full-fill agitated rinses, short spin.
