Hey friends. I am in the market for an upright freezer and I’m trying to keep costs down and quality up as much as possible anyway. I found this old gem on the local marketplace and I wanted to make sure this was a good option for me to go with. It’s an old Hotpoint/GE 16 cubic foot model and it looks pretty good overall, not perfect but it doesn’t need to be perfect. The price is very good at $200 so I just wanted to know if these are reliable and I won’t have to worry about failure due to end of lifespan etc. Obviously I don’t expect anyone to know how long it will last, just looking for reassurance that this is a solid choice. Thanks for the advice.

This is a manual defrost model. They are good freezers but if it is in a warm space and/or the door is opened often you will have to remove the food and unplug it in order to defrost it on a regular basis. The positive is manual defrost models often have a lack of temperature swing that causes freezer burn on stored food. The downside is having to defrost it. Everyone has their own opinion of which is best.

 It's been three years since I defrosted my '60s Penncrest upright freezer. It's on my to-do list, but the frost is still far from out of control, and it forms in a way that doesn't encroach much on storage space. Nothing like the '60 Wards Tru-Cold that we left behind at our former home.
$200 seems pretty steep for that Hotpoint, and I'm basing that on similar freezers I've seen listed here in the overpriced SF Bay Area. They even show up for free fairly often. I hope the price is negotiable.
