Those prices were really getting up there.  Wish the catalog shots had dates.

What would be the year of these machines?

These came out September/October 1986, the exact ad that convinced me to buy the pair October 1986.

As they were listed as available in the Toast and Platinum colors, that would have been sometime around 1985.

Bob is exactly right. This ad is from the 1986 Fall & Winter catalog. These have the new control panel design.

Toast and Platinum were introduced for the 1985 models, and gone by 1987.

Tom, I beg to differ with you, it's 1986. I was on vacation visiting a former neighbor in Rochester, NY September, 1986. They had just been put on the Sears floor. Had friends with belt drive pairs that one had Toast and the other Platinum pairs. Kenmore 70 series models wee already utilizing the DD mechanism. But fall of 1986 is when the 80 & 90/LK series used the DD mechanism.

Bob, I was referring to the color selection only. This ad was from the 1986 Fall & Winter, actual page #906, which is page # 916 on the scanned version, so you are totally correct.

The Toast and Platinum colors first appeared in the 1984 Fall & Winter catalog (actual page # 1052, scan page # 1045), which I would consider 1985 model year. My former neighbor Thelma had the 24" set in Toast. They had the older control panel design, with the center dial configuration. I'm quite certain they got them in Summer 1985.

I was in my late teens in 1985/86 and I can remember seeing the Sears flyers that came in the Sunday paper. I noticed the new control panels and the different opening. I figured there was a minor design change.

Had no idea that these were a new platform until 1988 when my mom bought a Whirlpool 1 speed Super capacity washer with the 5 vane surgilator and filter in the barrel. Was the same design agitator in the KA washers of that time.

1986 (Fall/Winter)

When that was the end of Belt-Drive, and the first Direct-Drives were being phased in.

1981 and were pretty much completely phased in by the beginning of 1987.

Mom and I were at Sears and we saw the Limited Edition. The set was about $1500 and no way would dad not get upset if she bought it. In charcoal gray (only offered for a short time) it looked like the laundry that Darth Vader might have.
