Today we had a special guest in our parking garage under my apartment building. I guess the owner(s) visited someone in the building here and parked it for a while in the garage. I took some pictures.

No car show I think, at least not that I know. It was in our garage for a while during the midst of day. It was a wonderful day yesterday so perhaps they thought it was a perfect day to get it out and enjoy it.

Very sharp Louis!

As opposed to the Pontiac "Parisiette" badged Chevrolet Caprice.

I'm missing the point Mike about the Pontiac Parisienne. That model was introduced in 1958. I do know however there was a Renault Parisienne from around the time of the Pierce Arrow.

A bit of dry humor Louis

While the Canadian Parisienne of the 50's, 60's, 70's and 1981 only were Bonneville's with the uusal Canadian St. Catherines or Tanawanda N.Y. sourced Chevrolet Mill, the finnal version was only rebadged Caprice. Pontiac ended the full size Bonnie after the 1981 model run. The '82 was a rebadged mid sized LeMans based car. Pontiac ended V8 mill production after the 301 turbo for the Trans Am also in 1981. So, a US built Bonnie through 1976 had Pontiac 350's, 400's, or a 455. 1977 began sourcing Olds 350's when the Tiac 350 was cancelled.

The 1953 Nash Ambassador and Statesman series were nice looking cars. Don't know why their cars got so unattractive by the late 50's. Neighbors around the corner had a Statesman when I was little.

Those 1960 Edsels look almost the same as Ford Galaxies of that year. Just stuck on some different trim.

My sister had a Ford Tempo sometime in the 80's. She said it was almost as bad as the Renault Encore that preceded it.

I like the Ford Ranchero, but prefer the '72-'79 models.

Tom I almost always agree with you, but on the ‘53 Nash Ambassador and Statesman I have to disagree, personally.

My maternal Grandpa had ‘53 Nash Country Club 2 dr HT like the Black and Red one in the post above. Grandpa’s Nash was Light Green with a Dark Green top and it was as ugly as homemade sin.

He bought it new from the Nash dealer in Oakland, Calif. And then immediately left on a camping trip to Twain Hart with my Aunt and Uncle and their three kids. Twain Harte was maybe 150 miles away from their home.

When they got there the new Nash was acting up, something with the transmission. Grandpa was a mechanic and of course there were no nearby Nash dealers. So Grandpa and Uncle Ray got into my uncles ‘53 Mercury Monterey and drove to the nearest service station. The station had a grease pit like they all did then and a tow truck. Grandpa talked the service station owner into letting him rent the grease pit to repair the Nash himself and paid the guy to tow the Nash to his station.

Whatever parts were needed to make the repair apparently the service station had on hand. Grandpa and Uncle Ray got the Nash repaired. They stayed in Twain Harte for the rest of their vacation.

When they got back home the next day Grandpa drove the Nash back to the dealer in Oakland. In ‘53 there no warranties on new cars. Grandpa told the dealer about his breakdown on the brand new Nash and told them that he wanted them to take it back and give him another new car because if it was gonna breakdown in less than 500 miles he didn’t trust it. The dealer said no. To which grandpa replied, “Well if you don’t I’m gonna drive that SOB right through your plate glass window”, and he meant it. The dealer changed his mind and replaced the lemon Nash with another. Grandpa loved to relate this story about the Nash.

In ‘55 grandpa replaced that butt ugly Nash with an new ‘55 Studebaker Hawk 2 dr HT, tri-colored paint job in Coral, Charcoal and White with an matching interior. That was a hot little car.

Eddie

The only "new" car I ever had was a top-of-the-line sedan I won in a raffle. The raffle tickets cost me $300. One of the raffle organizers had already put about 1,000 miles on it, so it wasn't exactly new. Still have it; it's my main ride when I drive. In pretty good shape, aside from some minor parking lot dings here and there. Still runs like new. Not bad for a 25 year old ride that cost me $300...

That 1927 Hupmobile ad is certainly classy. I can't tell if the statue of the naked woman is also a fountain, or not.

A couple of my neighbors had '59 Oldsmobiles; one had a silver 98, and the other had a yellow 88, in addition to a '60 black dynamic 88 station wagon.

Thats a beautiful ‘50 Plymouth Rich!  My aunt Louise and uncle Harold had one just like yours only it was blue.  I can remember riding in that Plymouth on the streets of Richmond, Calif. with my aunt Louise driving and whipping through the gears on the three on the tree.

Those old Plymouths were built solid and were very dependable.  I’m sure you enjoy driving yours and the interest it must generate when  people of our generation see it. We all have memories of riding in those old cars from the 50’s.

We had a couple neighbors with '59 Oldsmobiles. Ruth Seibert had a Ninety-Eight in silver, and the Bates family had a Dynamic 88 station wagon in black.

The Johnston's at the corner had a '60 Dodge Dart in dark green.

My neighbor girl Carol had a Chevelle SS in lime green metallic that was either a '70 or '71.

My cousin Mike had a Camaro Berlinetta in light blue, but I think it was a '78.

Chrysler

My neighbors the Wilsons had either a '71 or '72 Chrysler Newport, and I believe it was part of the Royal series. I'll try to remember to ask her about that the next time I talk to her.

There was a Chrysler Royal in my neighborhood when I was a kid. It may have been a step below the Newport, but it was still a Chrysler.

Anyone remember the Cadillac Calais? It was like a DeVille with hand-cranked windows.

I believe the 1958 Edsel was the only year for the pushbutton transmission selector, located in the steering wheel hub.  The 1959 models used the more-conventional column shifter.  I suspect the later arrangement was less expensive and, as Edsels didn't sell like Ford was hoping, was an easy way to save money on what was to become a losing cause.

That is beautiful! When I was a kid, my friend Fred's dad had a late 30's car. I think it was either a Dodge or Plymouth, and a deep navy blue color. It had doors that opened like yours. I rode in it s couple times. Mr. Jones didn't like newer cars, so when he needed a different one by the mid 60's, he bought a Buick that was reddish brown, which I think was a 1954 model.

the color is called Hyundai Onyx Blue. It is very close to a color they had in 36 Called Dodge Blue.
My Mother in-law was here for Thanksgiving and loved riding in it she is 91 and Her father had one in the 30's.
I had to add turn signals for safety, also added fog lights. I believe it was the third year for dodge to use the Ram.

There is someone in my town that had a ‘35 Plymouth 4 dr sedan for sale for quit a while that was parked on the corner across the street from us. The roof had a square opening in the center that would have been filled in with a piece of wood and covered some type of imitation leather. I believe your ‘36 Dodge would have been the first year for Dodge to have an all steel roof.

Louis,
Without a side view of this ‘53 Chevrolet it’s difficult to definitively say whether or not it’s a BelAir. But from what I can tell from this photo it appears that the roof is the same color as the body, either a dark metallic blue or green. In my experience ‘53 BelAir’s usually had a different color roof than the body, so my guess is that your Mom’s ‘53 Chevrolet is a 210.

Thank you Eddie! That makes sense. It wasn’t my mother’s car, but a shared car of my father and his brothers. They had several as we understand. They worked together in the family company. So far we have identified a few Pontiacs, a few Chevies and a Vauxhall for the years 1947 - 1960. Later they all got their own car but there were still a few company cars for several uses, mainly six cylinder Opels.

Post# 1200727 , Reply# 90   3/4/2024 at 11:39 by CircleW (NE Cincinnati OH area)

Eddie, you are correct that the only way to identify it for sure is to see the side. The 210, and even the 150, could be ordered as a two-tone. To the best of my knowledge, the 150 lacked side molding, the 210 had a basic chrome side molding, and the Bel Air the deluxe side molding with the painted insert on the rear quarter, which matched the roof color (if two-tone, as most were).

Thanks Tom! I remember these Chevy’s very well. When my brother and I were very small we had a babysitter every week day while Mom went to work. Her name was Mrs. Hoskins and we called her Nannie and her husband we called PapPaw.

Nannie got a new ‘53 Chevrolet 210 2 dr sedan that was dark metallic green. Since she babysat not only Joe and I, but at least 3 to 4 other kids everyday she had PapPaw take out the backseat so that when all of us kids rode in the car with her we could play around on the floor of the back of the car. Now a days that of course would be verboten! Free range kids in the back of a car without seatbelts would be child neglect. But it didn’t seem to hurt us any, I guess we were just lucky.

My Aunt Doris bought a Bel Air brand new, either a '53 or '54. It was a two-tone, with the lower color "Surf Green", and the upper "India Ivory". She kept it until 1964.

Back then, many people ordered their cars from the factory, and the choices were nearly limitless. Evidently the customer specified a color code for upper, lower, and insert. One '53 Chevrolet ad showed a car with an all red body, with the trim insert in ivory. Another code specified the interior color.

Yes Tom, I noticed that too. Must have happened in some kind of restoration. Perhaps they weren’t able to purchase the right part and just painted damaged parts.

Louis,
The light blue ‘53 Belair in post#98 was one of the most popular colors here in Northern Calif. in the early 50’s.

My little brother Joe and I used to go on walks everyday all over our neighborhood. Once on a Sunday morning in ‘55 when I was 4 1/2 and Joe was 3 we were on one of those walks and about a block from home. We decided that we would see if we could hail a ride home, like my Mom used to sometimes hail a cab when we were downtown without the car. We had no idea that there was money involved, just that Mom would stand at the sidewalk and hold her hand out and a car would stop and pick us up and take us home.

So little Joey and I stood at the corner of the busy street that we lived on, about a block away from home, and I held my hand out to flag a car down for a ride home. Right away a light blue and white ‘53 Chevy Belair pulled up with a lady driving the car. She had on a blue suit, hat and white gloves and she opened the passenger side door. We asked her to drive us to 445 Dimm St., our home address, just like Mom did when we were downtown. The lady said get in. She asked us if our mother knew where we were? I said sure, she knew that we had gone for a walk.

Well this nice lady drove down the block and pulled up in front of our house. Then she said please go get your mother, which I did. Mom came out to this lady’s ‘53 Belair and the lady told her that we were hitchhiking and did she know that we were doing this? Mom said, no and she’d make sure that this didn’t happen again. When we got into the house she told us that we were never to do this again and that we we lucky that this nice lady had picked us up instead of some bad person that may have kidnapped us.

To this day there are still a few ‘53 light blue and white Belair’s right here in town and every time I see one of them on the road I think of little Joey and Eddie’s big adventure in ‘55.

Eddie

Good story, Eddie - glad it wasn't a kidnapper driving the Chevy!

A lady that lived a couple streets over from me had an old Bel Air that was "Woodland Green". This was when I was about 10 or 11 years old, and I didn't know her at that time. One time when I was riding my bike, she was going very slowly, and she said something out the window. I was just sure she was trying to kidnap me, and told my parents when I got home. The next day my mom was telling one of the neighbors about it, describing the person and car. She said that sounds like the car Millie B. (another neighbors sister-in-law's sister) has. So as my parents knew her, and that she would not kidnap me or anyone else, they took me over to her house. She told me she was sorry she had frightened me, she was just being cautious around children on bikes. She was really a very nice lady.

The light blue on the car above is "Horizon Blue".

We had a '53 Chevrolet 4-Door Sedan - Powerglide transmission and power steering
It was the solid light green color. We kept it until 1962 when we got a 4-Door Impala - With NO A/C.
