Are Fabric Matic Maytags still pitman trans models or just Dependable Care models? Im not too savvy on those later consoles as to which is which. Thanks.

Fabric Matic is Maytag's way of offering a Delicate cycle on a single-speed washer and spanned from the center dial specified models through at least the AX10/AX12 series. Dependable Care actually encompassed the last two major lines from the early 1990s until the end of the true Maytag products from Newton (NOT Norgetags).

Heres the machine in question for sale. It doesnt list a model. What are the chances it would have a pitman trans, and would the trans and spin basket fit my 1974 A407?

That's an A512. Only the last 6 months of the 12 series models got an orbital transmission so the chances are in your favor.

This machine has the larger tub so you can easily transform it into a TOL 712 model with nothing more than a console with the original wiring intact and any 2 speed motor from 1956-2006.

Dependable Care as a term doesn't encompass all two-belt machines?  What distinguishes Dependable Care vs. non-Dependable Care?

SearsParts diagrams says A512 is pitman prior to series 10, orbital for series 10(+) ... which they could be wrong.

I have an LA512 with pitman that has the Series field blank on the tag.  Serial 1984 April.

Thanks Dan, if I bought it it would be as a spin basket and trans donor for my A407 thats in dire need of a rebuild. Trans is leaking oil on clothes at times and splined shaft is very rusty which makes me think the sealing surface is as well and would ruin a new seal, plus my spin basket has some rot at a few holes and is badly yellowed from well water long before I got it. However its my daily and runs well otherwise.

Model number with a T

My 2 cents: The final months of the "12" series that used the Orbital transmission had a "T" at the end of the model number. The model A512 became the A512T if it featured the orbital transmission.

Dependable Care Maytag Washers

I think that this term was only used by MT on 2 belt helical drive washers, MT knew the 2 belt helical drive machines were more durable than the Norge-tags or Amana-tags even though they said in their advertising that the Norge-Tag would clean and rinse better.

MT kept the 2 belt helical drive washers in the mix for two main reasons,

One commercial models were all helical drive, second many mom and pop dealers told MT that if they discontinued the helical washer they would quit selling MT laundry appliances.

I could be wrong, does any one know for sure ?

Here are some pictures of a LA212 standard capacity that I recently acquired. This one was built in May of 1987 and has the pitman transmission. This one is also a great example of washer neglect by liquid fabric softener abuse.

Helical Drive

My great grandmother had a machine identical to that in reply 2 with the Helical Drive. They are great machines!

Update:

robbinsandmyers's profile picture

After me sending her repeated emails over a week asking her to get me the model number and that would most likely buy it and her telling me she hasnt been to the house where it is yet I  see she marked it as "Sold". What a C$#@!!!

I see she marked it as "Sold"

You've have to move on these things if you're really interested, i.e. get there in person ASAP.

How many times did I have to keep PMing her to tell her I was interested and to get me the model? All I got from her was she didnt live near the house it was at and was prob going there the next day. It was an hour away from me, I wasnt going there if it was an orbital trans machine.

Lost Maytag Washer

combo52's profile picture

I find if I really want something and the seller is not forthcoming you have to establish a good rapport with them and spend some money.

In this case it was not likely to work because you did not even know if you even wanted this washer,  in any case MT washers with pitman transmissions are not that  rare, we have scrapped at least 6 in the last year that had good transmissions and several machines with orbital transmissions.

I don't even brother offering them here as no one has ever bothered to come get one even for free, If you really want something Make It Happen.

I kept after her telling her I was interested but she wasnt very receptive to getting off her butt and going to the house to get me info. Not a very aggressive seller. The washer was $20.00 so she prob got tired after a while and scrapped it. It wasnt worth 2 hrs of my time driving for a machine that I couldnt use not knowing what trans it had. I wish you were closer because I would just buy a good used trans and spin basket from you because thats all I really need to get my A407 done.

tell her I was interested and to get me the model?

Personally, after two e-mails without a definitive answer would be the point where I either take a chance and drive there or move on.

With a flaky seller an hours drive away I would have passed unless I really needed/wanted the item.
