Perusing the latest issue of CR they showed three window air conditioners. I was struck by the similarity of the new Midea U shaped inverter unit. It's hardly a new design and isn't even as good as the original Comfort-Aire units from the 70s which allowed you to use it with either sash windows or side sliding windows. This one is only good for up/down sash windows but it's a start.. I had the Comfort Aire unit back in the 70s and it was great because the window slid right between it, like a mini split.

Just for reference, the famous vintage Comfort-Aire air conditioners.
