I'm having problems with my Maytag Centennial washer. The problem is when it's agitating. When the agitator makes it's turn in the one direction it sounds like a clicking noise and doesn't make it's turn in the opposite direction. It ends up just turning in one direction basically, and the clothes are rapping around it. The clicking noise is not terribly loud and it's a little difficult telling exactly where it's coming from.

It almost seems to come from the transmission or gearbox. Everything else is working fine except agitating. Spins good.

I installed a new neutral pack in the gearbox. The motor coupling is fine. The other gears in the gearbox looked fine, and the issue is still present. As far as can tell the clutch looked okay. I didn't think the clutch or brake would cause this issue though. I may be wrong. I then replaced the medium cam and dog ears. The issue is still there.

I've taken this washer apart before and did basic maintenance on it. Cleaning everything and repairing some minor rust.

I've done my own mechanic work all of my life and can usually fix anything on my own. With the internet now, I figured I'd give a forum a try. I'm a little stuck with this.

There's one thing I didn't check. When I had the gearbox apart, the cam and teeth on the shaft looked fine. I didn't check the gear under the neutral pack when I replaced it. Unless someone knows of another part that could cause my issue, I'll probably take the gearbox back out and check to make sure that gear is okay. It's probably not available though.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Ken

I have a similar problem with a Maytag Centennial VMW style machine.

I took the gearbox apart and removed all of the old oil. Cleaned it really well. I inspected all of the gear and they all look great. Doesn't seem to be any play in the shafts or gears. Put it back together and pretty positive everything is correct.

I first bypassed the lid switch and tried it in the setting to agitate with no water. It was agitating perfect and no noise, very quiet. I even held the agitator, both on the top section and bottom section and it still worked good. I let it fill with some water and the noise is back. Hum! Drained the water again and tried it and it seemed fine again. I'll post a URL link to a video of what it's doing.

well something is definitely not assembled correctly, or is worn/broken inside....

The clutch in the bottom of the agitator shaft is worn and slipping. You will need a new shaft.

That cluch on the bottom of the shaft is the only thing that I didn't replace. I've been thinking that might be the problem. I know everything else is is good condition. I'll give that a try. Thanks Jeff!

I had the exact same machine.

Two tools can solve the problem of ANY those "Faketags" very easily.

Gasoline and a match.

Instead of repairing that "thing", why not get rid of it a d buy a REAL washer?

In this specific case, I'll even say something you guys probably never saw me saying: "-get a Speed Queen!"

Thomas this machine is still a direct drive and not a VMW machine like you had.

when you're done repairing the washer

you may want to try it on high speed agitation.

Ouch! My bad!

For a second I thought it was a VMW.
