Nail Down Washer

Thats what these machines were called in the trade.

 

The nailed down name came from the fact that this machine was not intended to be sold, it was intended to draw people into the store with a low price and then the sales person would try to up-sell the customer.

 

Nail-down meant that the machine was nailed down and not to be sold, sales staff were actually penalized if they sold one of these machines.

John, I'm betting that's how our household ended up with a nail-down top load Signature portable dishwasher around 1970.  I remember my dad throwing a fit because there was only one of the advertised machines on the floor, and he managed to make them sell it to him IIRC by mentioning the name of the sales manager and they may have had to get his permission.  Or maybe since it was on casters he got it on a technicality.
