I have a Bosch WFF2000 and today, as I was unloading it, I noticed that right in the centre of the back of the drum, where the middle of the spider is, in two points, it looks like something is breaking in through the drum from the outside. At the moment there are no sharp edges but it won't take too much more for it to get to a point where it will damage the clothes. What is happening? I really don't want to get rid of it and will repair it if economically viable but before I call someone in to look at it, I wondered if any of you had experienced anything similar?

A picture would be good if your able to get one of the damage? IMHO it sounds like the drum is flexing and the area where the spider is bolted is usually under the paddles so unless they are loose you won't see anything ?

Show us what's happening and someone may know what you can do about it !!

I'm assuming the aluminium alloy drum-spider is fractured.

Does the drum revolve smoothly, or is it off-centre/wobbly/eccentric motion?

Thanks for the replies guys. I have taken two pictures. One is clearer than the other but you can hopefully clearly see what is happening. I recently had the suspension replaced and the machine runs a lot smoother because of it. The drum does turn smoothly although it is a little noisier than is used to be so have wondered if the bearing are on the way out, Given the age of the machine I wouldn't be surprised. I really don't want to get rid of it but I think that if the bearings are in need of replacement it might be uneconomical.

corrosion

that sure looks like corrosion on the backside is starting to break through-perhaps lint and gunk has built up between the corrosion and the aluminum spider-causing a galvanic effect.

Morning Paul , wow it does look as Brendan said above some galvanic corrosion going on , which although your Bosch is nearly 25 yrs old ? have never seen happen like that in a Bosch etc weakening and breaking through the stainless steel drum. .

Its probably the spider thats causing the problems only way through that is a replacement spider , drum and bearings while your at it for good measure.

Why not drop Chris (The Laundry Centre ) a message see if hes come across any scrapper machines / parts etc or scrapper machines if your wanting to keep it . Is this your daily driver ?

Cheers, Mike

Hi Mike. The machine is just over 25 years old and has given sterling service. It is my daily driver and the only machine I have. Cosmetically, it is in pretty good nick although it has some chips and marks on it. The dispenser drawer has had some internal repairs and some of the plastic on the outside is yellowed, which is expected but other than the recent suspension replacement, it has not had any repairs in its lifetime. I don't have the skills to do repairs of the magnitude that I think it needs now and although I could probably find spares from old machines I would have to get someone to do the work,

Also, as it is my only machine I need to decide quickly what to do as I can't do without a machine. Incidentally, on Sunday last I did a towel wash and when I emptied the machine some of the towels had gunk on them which looked like it might have come from a dirty door seal but as the seal is spotlessly clean I couldn't work out where it might have come from. Given the reply from Brendan (thank you Brendan), it would make sense now that this brown gunk has come through the breaks in the drum, from the outside.

I went to Currys after work just to look at what is available. I can't believe the cycle times on some of these machines according to the advertising spec on some of them - up to 330 minutes for a full load on a quick wash cycle. What the hell is that all about?! I don't want a timed fill, two rinse machine that takes all day. I don't want anything bigger than 7kg and would be happy with 6kg even. Even the new Bosch models feel cheap and flimsy. I've always dreaded this day 😐

Decisions decisions😕

before it "packs up"completely...

...which might be a couple more years of use :) you could cover over the corrosion areas with some epoxy or even silicone rubber to prevent clothes damage.
