Hi, I was on the boards for 3 seconds (well, maybe longer) about a year ago under another name but it doesn't seem to be working now. Anyway, I have a mid to late 90's Maytag Dependable Care washer (LAT9757aae) that leaks when I fill it more than half way. I took the front off and can see water dripping from the rubber seal that is between the driveshaft and the outer tub. I figure I've got a bad seal in the driveshaft tube, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to remove the agitator. (Of course 10 years ago, I could and had to take apart the innards of my JC Penney washer to put the seal back in place when a big load dislodged it, but this ain't no GE based Penny's washer.) If anyone's had this problem with one of these machines and can offer some advice, HEEELLLPP!!!

Thanks,
Anthony

Is there a screw near the bottom of the agitator?

There is! I just never noticed it before. I thought the top "screw" and the bottom fins of the agitator came off separately. Well, my theory seems to be disproved. This is what I'm faced with;

When the water level is set at "mini" It still comes up past that seal. Maybe it's the sheer pressure of all that water that makes it leak.

Stem & seal kit need replacing. Part # is 22204012. You need a spanner wrench to remove the tub nut, so you can remove the inner tub to get to it. You must remove the front panel and raise the top in order to remove the tub cover.
