I've been asked by a friend what would be the best way to transport a fairly recent (3 years old) GE Spacemaker 'unitized' stacked washer and dryer unit.  The picture is the current model but the one we'll have to move is pretty much the same.

I don't know much about this type of machine - I believe there are some models with a dryer that can be removed for transport but the GE is not one of them apparently.

Our first thought was that we'd have to stand the unit up in a truck (probably the safest thing) however, I was wondering if there was any way this could be moved on its back or a side.  I prefer not to but, I have moved a few vintage washers on their sides when appropriate precautions are taken.

Any advice or additional information would be greatly appreciated!

When my new set arrive last year, it was delivered standing up in the truck and that is how they brought it in and installed it. They removed the old one the same way. I believe my set is put together and the dryer cannot be removed on its own. These were both Frigidaire units. There was some packing materials over the tube of the washer to keep it in place.

yeah, if you don't have the "tuffet" on which the unit sat (which immobilizes the tub/motor) get some pool noodles and stuff them around to stop things from moving.

Moving A GE TL Stack

You can put it on its sides or back, but you should take some really firm foam blocks and put them between the washers tub cover and the underside of the washers top and then tape the washers lid closed.

These are not as hard to move as a FL washer which should never be moved on their sides without shipping brackets.
