More than likely, your washer is tempering the water.

some washers start the fill with cold water. My last GE front load machine started with cold water even when set for Hot. Then it would start the hot fill and temper it down to 120 IIRC.

Apparently you haven't paid attention to the numerous discussions about dumbed-down temperatures on washers nowdays.  U.S. machines particularly on the Normal / Regular cycle typically restrict Warm to 75°F-ish (24°C) and Hot maybe 95°F (35°C). Hot water won't flow if the cold supply is at or above the target temperature, or it may run for several seconds or a minute at first then switch to cold for rest of the fill.  Try the Heavy cycle or whatever choices you have other than Normal, it may provide higher temperatures.  Your old Duet wasn't as much restrictive as your new Maytag.

You could however adjust the temperature in your water heater tank if you wanted to add more hot water into your hot wash setting. But I wouldn't recommend it.

Raising the water heater setpoint may not have much effect when the washer is actively controlling the mix of hot and cold input flow to attain specific target temperatures.

whirlpool has done this trick way back in the direct drive series....

when you select HOT, and turn the machine on, the first 60 seconds is Tap HOT, the rest of the fill will be COLD....

you CANNOT turn the cycle selector around and re-start thinking it will give you 60 more seconds of HOT.....the timer has to run a complete cycle to reset...

this falls in line with many discussions of WARM rinses available on machines....in that only the final Spin Spray is WARM, the Rinse fill is COLD....

most people dont realize this happens, as they load the machine, set it and forget it...if they sample the water temp, it is usually within the first minute of fill...

note too....most warranty service will not cover for issues you think is wrong with the machine, whether it is mentioned in the book or not....if you call for an issue you think is a malfunction, and find out it is the normal operation of the machine, welcome to a service charge....

GETTING COLD WATER WHEN WARM OR HOT WAS SELECTED

Table of contents
Why am I getting Cold Water when I selected Warm or Hot
Why am I getting Cold Water when I selected Warm or Hot
The table below shows the approximate water temperature you may expect when making a temperature selection.

Note: Tap Cold will vary based on your location and it is not regulated by the unit. That selection will bring in tap water at the household water temperature.

Water Selections

Wash Temperatures

Hot 101 - 115
Warm 80 - 85
Cool 65 - 75
Cold 55 - 65
Tap Cold Tap Cold
For most washers, water enters the unit from two valves on the rear of the appliance (we have a few models that only have one inlet valve). One valve regulates the hot water and the other valve regulates the cold water. See image below. The water flows into the tub from the upper rear section of the unit. If the unit has a dispenser water flows through the dispenser. Only one valve will cycle on at a time. The unit will first dispense cold water at the beginning of every wash cycle regardless of the water temperature selection. The washer senses the temperature at the bottom in the tub and not at the incoming valve where the water enters the appliance.

You must also take into consideration where you are located. Based on the ground temperature if you select a cold wash, you can invariably see the unit bring in warm water in order to take the water to the required temperature. For example, someone who lives in a colder region may see the unit alternate between cold and warm water even though they may have selected a cold wash. This is because the tap water temperature may be too cold for a cold wash and the unit will compensate to bring the water temperature to an acceptable level to provide best cleaning.

The same is true for people living in a hot region. The tap water may be warmer than normal and so if you request a warm wash the unit may never make a request for hot water since the water entering the appliance will be at the proper wash temperature coming out of the water line.

If you would like to download or view product literature for your appliance, please visit our Manuals and Literature page. So it must be because of the heat we are having then

Correct Martin. We were talking about that when you were here last Saturday. The 2003 Kenmore 90 series I had I know for a fact did a warm rinse yet this older 90 series does the spin spray warm and the rinse fill cold. Never knew the machines would have varied like that. Plus the fact that the timer also delays the rinse agitation after fill...never saw a Whirlpool/Kenmore do that.
