Our 30+ year old Maytag stopped spinning, so I replaced the belts, tub bearing, and tub seal. Now it spins fine, but it leaks badly where the transmission goes into the tub bearing.

I took it apart twice, checking that everything was clean, in good condition, and assembled correctly, but to no effect.

Any ideas what may be wrong?

Thanks, Carl

How was the condition to the agitator shaft where the seal rides? If badly pitted that could cause water intrusion although probably not as large or so soon.

Otherwise something is damaged, defective or installed improperly.

Try this link for Maytag tub bearing and seal install:

Good idea- I'll check the condition of the shaft tonight. Thanks!

I think we have a winnah! The mounting stem and seal still look good, but the agitator shaft is all eaten up where the seal touches it. Hard to believe the old seal (which looked even worse than the shaft!) was holding water right up until I removed it.

It looks like you can't buy the shaft anymore, but I hate to retire this trusty washer. Any ideas how to get a few more years out of the old girl? Maybe put JB Weld on the shaft and set it on spin while I smooth and shape the epoxy with emery cloth?

Worse agitator shaft I've ever seen.

Why did you ever bother putting it back together?

Only option is to find another used Maytag washer or swap out the trans for a short stroke orbital transmission and matching agitator.

BTW

Your clean up job on the stem mounting threads looks half assed.

Did you replaced the tub beaing spin tube? They get seized on sometimes and need to be split off with a cold chisel and the trans surface polished with scotch brite.
