Hi all,

First off—I just discovered the forum this week while researching washer/dryer sets for a new home. It's amazing! What a charming little corner of the Internet—and one that's already been a huge help to me. So thank you all.

My wife and I just bought our first house and are in need of a washer/dryer set. Just us two at the moment but a baby is on the way; we typically do five or six loads of laundry, every ten days or so, in our current apartment's stackable set, a Whirlpool ThinTwin, I think.

My mother-in-law has owned a Miele set for the past 15 years and loves them, for all sorts of reasons. In our new place, laundry will be in the kitchen under a regular-height counter, so compact is a must for us. I've also been looking at lots and lots of appliances over the past few weeks, and there's something I just kind of love about the look of Miele laundry machines. They make me think of 2001: A Space Odyssey. All that to say—we're heavily leaning Miele.

But I'm really confused about the model numbers, and the more I search, the further away a decision seems to get. But I'm hoping someone here might be able to help!

On their website, Miele lists the WXD 160 WCS at $1,199 and the WXF 660 WCS TDos at $1,499. In addition, at some retailers (but not mieleusa.com), I'm seeing the WWB 020 WCS at $1,199 and the WWF 060 WCS at $1,499. Some places list the 020 as "Classic." The specs on them seem to be slightly different—different wash programs; the 020 seems to have a max spin speed of 1400 rpm, maybe?; WXF 660 comes with TwinDos while WWF 060 doesn't; etc. At the appliance showrooms we've been to, the salespeople haven't seemed know many details about the different Miele models.

Is there any method to what seems like madness? Some categorical difference(s) between the WX and WW models? I trust there is, but I can't for the life of me figure it out!

The basic questions motivating my research are, one: How do we decide whether or not to spend the extra $300 for one of the next-tier-up machines? And, once we've figured that out, question two: How to decide between the price-equivalent models?

Also, any advice or comments on stuff like whether TwinDos is useful and/or economical, which wash programs are a must, which aren't, thoughts on the dryer models, or really anything related would also be extremely welcome! Thank you in advance!!

Ok

So the 160 and 020 have the same, simpler, user interface.
Just the cycles around the dial, 4 options, 6 temp and spin selections.
Display is a 7-segment type, so just numeric display.

The 660 and 060 both have the 1-line display.
Means more spin speed choices, more cycles.
Also allows for more programming flexibility as all programming levels are accessible due to the plain text display capability.

Easiest way to decide is to just Google all models and download a manual.
Compare cycles and see what offers what.

I personally am perfectly happy with my 7-segment display machine, but cycle selection over here is entirely different so can't comment on what the US cycles are like.
Just read through the list and see if any machine offers anything that sounds useful to you. Most cycles do very good at what they say.

Agree with Henene4 about downloading the manuals and comparing. That's what I do when I am trying to make a decision. For example, some of the lower-priced models will not let you add an extra rinse and their settings menu is harder to navigate. Moving up the line in price will add more cycles and functions such as automatic dosing and spraying of the clothes as they tumble. I suggest reading the manuals to get an idea of how each machine operates and what it offers.

As far as programs I like Wrinkle Free because it will wash a load of cottons or polyester very well and use enough water and heat while doing so. Another good cycle is baby clothes even though that is not what I wash in it. I wash moderately to heavily soiled cotton clothes in this program instead of using the Normal cycle.

I have Twin Dos and like it. I also use powdered and special detergents for gym clothes so I alternate between them.

Thank you both so much! Lots of helpful info. Took a long look at the user manuals of all the machines, and tried to get a sense of what actually using them would be like. Ended up placing an order for the base-level washer and dryer. I really like the straightforwardness of the simpler user interface. Looking forward to using them! Thank you again!
