Question????

gadgetgary's profile picture
Rob(Unimatic)

The ABC O Matic with the window in the lid and two dials....Didn't Kelvinator make a machine similar to that one?
I remember going to a neighbors house to watch her do laundry in that very same machine. Watched it thru the glass window...and the water shot out from the back through a jet to the fill flume inside the machine.

Funny thing was that the machine went out of balance a lot an popped the dial when doing that. I was fascinated with the 'splashy' action of the wash and the wonderful overflow rinse. And I think the water temp. selections were only hot and warm(correct me if I am wrong).

Ahhhhhh....those wonderful childhood memories.

That neighbor even had a stool for me to watch the action of her machine. Guess she never knew then where I would be in 2006 at aw.org.....:-)

Didn't Kelvinator make a machine similar to that one?

Gary the answer is yes, but it was the other way around. ABC made all Kelvinator washers until 1958 when Kelvinator bought out ABC and continued to use the ABC-o-Matic design for their washers until 1967.

Baja, here is the only pic I have at the moment and this is before clean up. It really cleaned up great. Almost all of that is dirt that looks like rust. It does not have the bleach feature and it has the small white filter-flo pan. I will try to get an after pic and a pic of the lid in the near future for you. Life is really busy the next few weeks.

Thanks for looking!

I really enjoyed these pictures. What beautiful machines these are. Was it because they were (relatively) so expensive; or because the technology was still expanding? Somehow, somewhere along the way the cachet got lost.
My favorites are the 1958 Frigidaires. If I ever get to visit your collection, Robert, you'd better frisk me when I leave...I know exactly what I'd take with me.

Love this thread. Uni, thanks for the pics of the ABC. I live 35 miles from the ABC factory, or perhaps where it was. I was wondering if you would share with us the history of ABC.
I have an ABC wringer from '55 and then another one that is similar but says ABC a product of Kelvinator, American motors. I would love to find an ABC omatic. Thanks, Gary
