What was that weird buzzing noise? It stopped before I could find it. Awhile later it started again and turned out to be the Speed Queen washer. Full of water on the spin cycle. Spun the dial around and it will agitate. No drain/spin on any cycle just a loud transformer like buzz noise.

After reading around here I took the front cover off to see if it was a locked up drain pump. I can turn the motor in both directions and the tub starts to turn in one direction. So the motor is only running in one direction and buzzing for the drain/spin direction although it turns freely by hand in both directions.

The oil all over everything from the transmission is concerning. This one has, the first year of, the 15 year parts warranty on the transmission. Washer Model AWN432SP111TW01 There are drips of oil on the floor under the washer.

I called a local SQ service center and they suggested it would be around $500 in labor to swap the transmission out. And it may need other things like seals, bearings, and the oil coated brake replaced.

I called SQ and they would be happy to send a transmission out, were not sure what all other parts it may come with or be covered like the brakes. Because it had warranty left on it SQ did not want to offer a discount on a new SQ washer.

I hate to throw money at fixing the spin cycle problem only and then wonder: when the oil coated brakes will fail or when the transmission will run out of oil and lock up.

So how bad is it? Are other parts like the brake covered from being oiled up from a transmission failure?

Given I can't replace the transmission myself: is this extensive of a repair going to be cost effective vs. a new washer?

Non Spinning SQ TL Washer

It sounds like you have a bad timer, replace it and just clean up any oil with old rags or paper towels and recheck if it is still leaking much in another year or so.

The oil will not hurt the brake shoes, it might shorten the belts life.

A lot of washers leak some oil, it will not likely fail for 5-15 more years from the oil leak.

Thanks for the sanity check on the oil leak. SQ repair man said it wasn't a problem. However IF it needed a transmission it would be over $500 in labor. Warranty on this part = worthless. (Unless you DIY.)

So it's running today on it's second load. Something jamming the drain pump the SQ repair man said. It immediately ran for him after he pulled the front cover off and messed with things around the motor.

(Maybe the belt was slipping on the motor when I turned it over by hand, yet, it would agitate but buzz only for drain after I tried that.)

Said the fill valve is filling slow and suggested P/N 201468P

I believe this is the 30/70 fill valve as it's done it from day #1 - is there a older 50/50 fill valve part number from SQ I can request they use? I cranked the cold water valve down to adjust "Warm" in the past, so yeah, it fills slow.

Transmission on SQ and a few thoughts on vmw

I personally think the mechanical models will outlast their new TC models. Is there someone else in the area that might charge less?

I don’t think II could replace a transmission on a Speed Queen, but I think I could replace a gear case on a Maytag mvwp575gw. I mention this because the vmw design is a plus in that respect. The part is not free, but still a lot less than what you are being charged for labor.

Instead of turning the cold down, why not try this? My Maytag does have tap hot for the deepwater cycles. I am not sure what the ratio of warm to cold is for warm. If I want a warmer warm, I start by filling with hot and then switch it over to warm. It uses ATC instead of a restricting hot water flow.
