I remember when this ad campaign broke. I had never seen Jane Wyatt in color before this picture. I don't think that any of the FKB reunions had been made or broadcast before this. She did not look like the lady who played Margaret Anderson. I wondered about the appliance connections in front of that plate glass window.

I'm willing to bed you that "set" was all for show, not even a real laundry area.

But isn't that Jane Wyman?

Tom - you're thinking too much.  There's no way that's a working laundry room.  While the setting might be Jane's home, that perfectly new pair are positioned there for show, nothing more.

Greg - nope, that is Jane Wyatt.

These are exactly like the set of LK’s that my favorite aunt replaced her ‘55 Westy slant front set with when they moved and sold the Westy’s with the house. I used to go to her house to visit when I’d first moved away from home and do my laundry in her machines. They were very nice, but they weren’t a nice as those beautiful Westy slant fronts.

I think it's interesting that her character on FKB, Margaret Anderson, had a front loader. It wasn't a slant front, so it may have been a Bendix or something similar.

That set reminds me of the one redcarpetdrew had awhile back but his was a 900 series set which had a few less features than the TOL Lady Kenmore set but otherwise had similar features to the 1968 Lady Kenmore.

Not Jane Wyman

in the Kenmore add. It's Jane Wayatt. She died in 2006 and was age 96.

Staging

Same with the later Rosemary Clooney version of the same ad with garage door units. The appliances are in some sort of hallway half inside and half outside, and there is no way that there is proper hookup behind them. As with Ms. Wyatt, Ms. Clooney talks only about the washer. I heard a still small voice inside me wondering whether the dryer in at least one of the ads was there for show, and one of the women owned only the washer. Musician Dave Brubeck's ad about his coppertone garage door LK dryer showed only a dryer, however.

Def. staged.

They can just wheel the appliances into any room and it makes the appliances comfortable vs. a laundry room. Even if it is a real house, it's not likely to be the stars home. They wouldn't want that hulla-baa-loo happening in their home for silly photo shoot. Someone sets up the machine at either a rented house but more likely the home of one of the photographers or producers, the star comes in, they snap the pic, the star leaves.
Then of course there is the studio where they have accurate control of all aspects. There they can make up any type scene they want.

And just because a star CLAIMS they owned the machines, doesn't mean they did. Are we to believe they didn't have Maytags or more likely a weekly laundry service? Either way, they probably had cleaning staff that did that kind of stuff anyway.

Ahh- but those were the days (60s and 70s), when appliance advertising was EVERYWHERE and it was relatable.

Staged?

I know of a washer and dryer in front of a window much like the first one. When the house was remodeled they wanted to bring the laundry up stairs out of the unfinished basement. the only place was in the breakfast alcove in the kitchen. It had a large window that went almost to the floor. The lady of the house hung curtains at the level of the backsplash to hide the back of the machines from view outside but from inside it looked very much like the picture with Jane Wayatt.

Appliances are essentially furniture and can go where ever people put them. Often it's where there are connections but if a home doesn't have them, they have to make them.
How many times have we seen pictures where an elderly couple wants to stay in their home but had the washer dryer moved upstairs so they wouldn't have to do the stairs.
In Florida, it's not unusual to find make-shift laundry rooms in sheds and lean-tos. I've even saw washing machines literally sitting on a patio connected because that's where they use it in the state that usually doesn't freeze.

New homes used to have laundries in the basement but now fewer homes have basements and laundries have moved to laundry rooms adjacent to bedrooms or even in the master closet.

Go to time stamp 41:00. Scene in the laundry room. Probably Kenmore, but makes me almost think that it's Canadian Kenmore?

Benk, thank you for the screen capture. I was only focusing on the control panel. IF I'd just looked down to when Jane was messing with that big white garment, I would have seen the windowed door and known immediatly it was one of the last Combos!!!

Kenmore Combos (not necessarily that particular one) occasionally appeared in TV shows. The show "family" initially featured a 1960's Frigidaire washer with the Kenmore combo appearing as the dryer. After the first few seasons, the Frigidaire was replaced with a Philco top loader but the Kenmore combo stayed. Interesting though in one holiday episode, an elderly man befriended by Buddy (Kristy McNichol) was said to be fixing the washer, and it was the Kenmore combo that was pulled out from the wall with the back off of it. I guess no one paid a lot of attention to consistency. Also, on early "family" episodes, the Frigidaire was next to the back door with the Kenmore to the left. Later episodes had the Kenmore next to the back door with the Philco to the left.

And in the Father Knows Best clip, while it was a bit fuzzy, it looked like a nice big box of Instant Fels on the shelf above the machine....

I just watched the first episode of Highway To Heaven on YT. There was a white LK Combo placed in what would be considered the laundry room of an apartment unit. Could see 1/2 to 3/4 of it. But it was recognizable with that door.

And didn’t our beloved Faye Dunaway/Joan Crawford have two Sears or Whirlpool combos in the famous “we’ll manage” scene in the laundry room?

Yes, it was two LK Combos in that/those scenes.
