Wonder why I can spend hours obsessing over the best lineup of appliances for redoing the kitchen, but could NOT care less about the color of the walls? We're in the middle of doing some landscape work outside, and our designer said "oh, you'll need to pick out some pavers...go to Unilock.com and let me know what samples you'd like me to bring over." I wanted to say "lady, I could not care less and can barely distinguish between multiple mottled gray patterns'. I was mentioning to Brian that this must be why the idea of having a house built fills me with dread---I simply cannot care whether the walls are Antique White, Eggshell White or Baby's A@@ Blush...

Same here, I'm more interested in appliances, exhaust fans, the wall switches, anything else BUT colors of paint and flooring. LOL

That's typical people

bradfordwhite's profile picture

Each of us is INCREDIBLY detail oriented about some things, while other things apparently are meaningless to us.

For example: some people can put a bunch of effort into their home but be oblivious to WHERE it's located.  Such as in this upper class subdivision in a prominent midwest community.

A $ million & half house supposedly that someone spent some time designing

BUT, it's backyard overlooks a toxic commercial waste dump that's an EPA Superfund site now. Would you want to live next to that?  Maybe in the 50s when people didn't know any better one could see this happening but to do it in the last 30 years when it's common knowledge?

Oh, and another point about this subdivision there is a large diameter gas pipeline about 200' from it.

 ------

I'm VERY color sensitive.  When it comes to my home, clothes, furniture, car, my appliances....really anything I own: color is important.

Negative, down-beat, repressive, regressive colors are a def. NO.  Only a masochist, someone into self harm, or someone who wants to brainlessly follow a trend would be into those.

Just some advice: avoid GRAY, dk blues, and ugly greens.  Those hues have been way overdone.  There are house shaming groups that point out just how bad the current throw-away gray trend is with it's faky-farmhouse b.s. and those stupid particle board "barn-doors" inside a house, among other things.

Unless one is legally color blind the colors of one's surroundings ARE usually very important.

Test yourself:  Let's say you have a favorite appliance, or shirt, or car and they are a given color and/or pattern and/or texture that you are happy with now.

Ask yourself if that item were a completely different or opposite color and/or pattern and/or texture would you care?

So, if you typically drive a dk. green truck that you like and with the snap of a finger it was suddenly a wonderful pink pastel, or a white with green polka-dots, or it was covered in what looks like simulated 1950s paneling... would you care?

If you were a married woman and your white wedding dress were suddenly made out of military grade camouflaged printed denim ....would you care?

--

If you actually do care about color, and most people do (even though some are weirdly afraid to admit it), it might be a good idea to study some color psychology so you can make your colors work FOR you instead of being worked-over (being it's bitch) by color.

No has should denigrate someone else or call them names because they like a particular color, whether it be in their clothing, appliances or wall/trim colors.

No one has a right to say your color values are right or wrong.

Many people like muted tones. Grays are stately and neutral. Browns elude warmth and comfort. Others enjoy bright/bold colors and theses often fit an outgoing personality.

We don't have to like what others do, but we have no right to condemn them for their personal tastes.

What seems gaudy to one may be cheery to someone else. What may be depressing to one may be relaxing to another. Their tastes differing from yours does not make them "braindead."

Most of us probably have likes that fall within a "normal" range of colors, shades and schemes. By "normal" I mean a range that is widely accepted. Others may fall outside of this range. Others, as mentioned above, do not have much of an opinion on colors, etc. and may give little to no thought on colors schemes within their homes. That's fine too.

There is not one person on this planet who doesn't fall outside of the "normal" range in some facet of their life.

You know.....If we were all alike it would be a very boring world.

Yes

I've heard men, in particular, down play color as though it were a weakness to be concerned about color.

Yes, some do. For others, it's just not a concern. Their lives revolve around other things.

Jamie L,

you may recall the Liquid Disposal scandal up in Shelby township, Michigan from the 1980's. It too was a superfund site full of dioxin, I think. It's the fenced off area near Hamilin, and Ryan roads, bordering the old Ford and Packard proving ground.
There was also Warsaw park there.
There are new subdivisions very close now. One was built in the 90's and has a man made lake.
