Yes finding one to rebuild and swap out is probably the best thing to do. It’s an ‘83 model built the 29th week of ‘84. These particular machines were bad for the spin tube seal failing and due to the low center post would cause water to fill the gearcase. Regardless of whether this is what happened or not that seal needs to be replaced when the gearcase is swapped out. I have all the faith that you can keep this machine going with your mechanical skills.

If no one here has one for you this place has been offering used ones for some time now. I’m sure they would need to be rebuilt to be reliable.

The ebay seller that Melvin posted, I've had good luck with them for other parts in the past. A few years ago I sourced some vintage parts for my Frigidaire agi-tub laundry center, among other parts, from them. Bill |

I bought a transmission from the same eBay seller, worked but the oil that spilled out of it whenever I laid the machine down was quite contaminated, took it apart not too long ago and appears it was in a basement flood at some point and one of the gears has a date code of 1977. Going to be packing that one with cord head grease which is designed for machinery such as farm equipment which when agitated and moved around is like a heavy gear oil but turns back into grease when it settles.
