Best Dryer Ever Made

This is hands down my favorite dryer ever made! <3 I love the generous timed dry and the simplicity of the controls. The low/knits setting simply switches out one of the heaters. These could also be converted to 120 volts without issue.

Can someone save this machine?

Basic GE Electric Dryer

These were simple and crude, with only a one high heat thermostat these were responsible for lots of ruined clothes and fires, they could never get away with building a dryer like this today.

As it is GE still has more than their share of dryer fires with 5000+ watts of heat directly behind the drum and less that 2" away from a load of dry synthetic clothing.

One High Heat Thermostat

Right, however low/knit only ran one heating element. With proper airflow (unrestricted vent duct) the temperatures were more than reasonable.

I agree the placement of the heating elements should not be right behind the clothes (I've seen wire cloth hangers protrude and rip the elements off the supports and twist them around the bearing), but as we both know GE dryers are still built this way today. Modern GE dryers also switch out one of the elements to achieve various temperatures.

Regarding the picture, I am not in disagreement. Modern GE dryers are almost identical to those from the 80s and earlier.

GE needs to treat their electric dryers like their gas dryers, and put the elements in a cylindrical tube underneath the drum and pipe the hot air up and over. Or better yet copy the Whirlpool top mount lint filter.

Another thing I saw with these dryers was the amount of lint built up inside, it was unreal, more so than the few none GE dryers I've seen.

I however will stand behind having two timed dry cycles, in the right hands timed dry is better than auto dry.
