Hello,

My mum has a Whirlpool washing machine from back in the day and it's still going strong. It completes the wash cycle but will not spin until she hits the lid quite hard. I'm wondering how the lid switch works on this machine as I can't see any buttons or hinge levers.

From your pictures the location of the lid switch is not obvious but it’s probably attached to the hinges in some way.

If you raise the top of the machine you’ll probably see wiring attached to it if you can’t easily correct the problem by adjusting it or replacing a part you may consider bypassing it so the washer with spin with the lid open or closed.

I have a very vague recollection that the lid switch is in behind the hinge. Look at the hinges, there is a fine "pin" moulded into the top half of the hinge, it presses into the lower half when closed, I think the lid switch might be actuated by that pin on one of the hinges. Is there a hole in the lower half hinge that the pin pokes in to?

I used to have an earlier version of this machine, but it was too long ago, I don't remember.

Take and post close-up photos of the lid hinges for clarification on them.

The plastic hinges have a pin that pushes the lid switch. It could be that the pin has broken off, or the switch has failed.

You should find the centre of the hinge and if you push it, it’ll make a click.

To lift the top, you need to take the metal plate off the back of the control panel. The hob then slides forward and lifts up. With the control panel, be careful as the plastic end pieces are very brittle by this time.

The lid switch is secured in place by the hinge. Again, be careful with the hinges as the plastic can be quite brittle by now.

Depending on what’s wrong, I may have hinges or a switch spare, but I’d really need to dig into my parts to check.
