Super interesting 56 57? hotpoint washer WUNDER DIAL

Did it sound like a cement mixer before you took the pump off? With the machine on its side I'd try rotating the transmission pulley in both directions to see if you have feel any resistance, especially for agitation. From the Hotpoint service manual: Viewed from top of washer motor rotation is CW (agitate) or CCW (spin).

I'm impressed you got the pump off unless it put up a fight without comment, as well as the wash tub from the hub. While it does look minty this Hotpoint looks very much used. That is a ton of rust on the hub nut and agitator shaft. Before throwing the wash tub back on the hub you'll want to feel below it to see if the boot has any tears and if it is pliable. The nearly new Hotpoint I restored a few years ago tore the original boot just after a few washes due to having become brittle after decades of sitting.

The nut holding the wash tub hub on the transmission is a 1-7/16", standard threads (post 69 with the fast brake the nut switched to reverse threads). Some heat, PBR, and a heavy mallet with a good wrench should pop it right off.

Checkrate/Likes Hi all well I sure wanted to get this thing up and running but have run into a snag. I have a theory that this machine has never been used, because it is a lemon. Everything turns freely, the motor isn't freezed, but when it is trying to agitate and spin it sounds like a cement mixer and the reset button trips. Interestingly the undercarriage and everything looks suspiciously like new. My question is how easily is the tub supposed to spin? It seems to work fine but again when the power is to it it doesn't sound good. It's too bad it would work fine without this. I used to own one of these but I can't remember -- truth is it seems like it should be working -- but it doesn't. I guess I will continue to take it apart. Checkrate/Likes My question is how easily is the tub supposed to spin? Hi Brian, the tub should turn very easily in the counterclockwise direction. It should have anti-indexing brake so turning it clockwise should be difficult. I may have mixed up the clockwise/counter-clockwise but I don't think so. Either way one direction it should turn very easily. Does it not turn in either direction? This looks like a 1958 model because it has the newly designed Co-Axial transmission, '58 was the first year of this new tranny.

Checkrate/Likes *Thanks* Well I don't think it was new but a very low use machine. I've got the inner tub out and it just is rusty crusty around the shaft and bearing. I have cleaned it up but I had to take a lot of it apart. I hope I can get it together tomorrow. Hopefully with a little turning I can free it up. View Full Size
