1968.  I believe 18 lbs capacity went more main-stream in 1974, at which point most WP models were offered in both standard and super capacity.  1974 was also the first 18-lbs capacity Lady Kenmore.

But also remember there was 1 Kenmore 18 pound model too about this same time.

Kenmore added a second 18-lb model with lesser features sometime around 1972 ... not considering possible other choices that may have been marketed outside the SS and FW catalogs.  And a third model in late 1973.

So which manufacturer was the first to offer 18-lb capacity and in what year? I want to say Norge was the first but I’m partial..!

Todd I’m pretty sure Norge was first. Kenmore and Whirlpool both debuted their 18 pound machine in 1967. Kenmore had a new model for 1968 which carried their single 18 pound machine until early 1972 when a new model was introduced. At this time they started advertising the 18 pound capacity whereas before it was not. There was not a matching dryer to the Kenmore before 1972 although Kenmore did have a dryer with an 8 cubic foot drum. By 1974 there were more models in the 18 pound capacity and when the 1976 Kenmore line came out the standard capacity machines were on their way out. I believe Kenmore stopped production of the standard capacity machines in 1980 while Whirlpool continued building them for their line.

Norge was the first TL washer wit a really big tub in 1964, interestingly they only called it either 14 or 15 pounds [ which was realistic ] and later upped it to 16, 18 and then 20 pounds without increasing the tub size at all.

Did anyone notice the 1968 WP brochure from yesterday only listed Gas dryers ?

Norge using same big tub, upped pound rating

I think they "achieved" this by simply changing the agitator from the big black bakelite agitator in our 15 lb. 1964 DispensoMat washer to the plastic agitator with the smaller fins/blades.
