I tend to read negative reviews on sites first and it seems like all new dishwashers may make it 3 years if that.

I need a dishwasher. I've tried used but that hasn't worked for me.

Can anyone recommend a new, basic dishwasher that works? I don't have a lot of money. I was even looking at Ikea but there aren't many reviews.

Thank you!

Ikea USA are Whirlpool

last I looked.
You can get a b.o.l. machine by them or GE for about $350 or so.

Find a used, low mileage well taken care of Kenmore UltraWash with the Powerclean module.

I don't think you'll be satisfied with the performance of a cheap dishwasher whether it's new or used.

Yes, new dishwashers seem to have a very low lifespan theses days and I don't see that problem going away in the future.

I agree with Dan.  Kenmore Ultra Wash machines are both reliable and good at what they do.  Similar machines can be found under the Whirlpool and KitchenAid brands.  They're all excellent performers and show up in on-line classifieds for cheap fairly often.

Here's an example of a Kenmore I found for $30 several years ago:

Ikea dishwashers are now by Frigidaire.

Our Whirlpool is still chugging along after 3 years . . .

. . . with no sign of giving up the ghost any time soon.  I vinegar-wash it every 4 weeks because of our hard water.

I found this dishwasher. Don't know if it's an ultra wash.

One problem with used is we've had several natural disasters the last few years and people sell flooded items but lie about them having flooded.

That looks very much like an Ultra Wash and it likely has the "(soil) sensor wash" feature.  If the seller's "fully operable" claim holds, $50 is a fair price.

This one is free. Only 1 pic, though.

I can't identify that one.  Definitely a lesser model with a timer knob.

That's a Maytag dishwasher. Fairly high in the lineup for the time.

Maytag?

The graphics remind me of the second generation Maytag, after the reverse racks.

The Maytag would be louder than the Kenmore for sure.

Are the new Whirlpools worth buying?

lotsosudz's profile picture
Consumer Reports claims the new Whirlpools, and the Bosch are the best rated overall.
I like the Bosch, but dislike the smaller racks, Doe's anyone have a new Whirlpool unit, and would you recommend them? My old Point Voyager KA is starting to linger like a bad fart! I think I'm on borrowed time. Appreciate the feedback in advance!
Hugs,
David

I would take that Whirlpool Power clean if its in good working order,

The power-clean edges out my KDS21 Kitcheaid cause you can throw the whole dinner in the dishwasher and it will grind it up and dispose of it.

My Power clean Kenmore had a dispose function on the cycle..

The Kitchenaid has a full blown grinder in it also but food can barley reach it.

The Power-cleans run for 20 years easy with min up keep.

If that Maytag is in working condition, grab it! Run, don't walk. We had a Maytag a few years newer but the same wash system, and it has been the best performing dishwasher overall that I've had. Holds a lot, full top and bottom spray arms with a tower between. Excellent washing without pre rinsing, great drying, short cycles. Sadly the timer went on mine and I decided not to repair it. As mentioned above, not a particularly quiet machine by today's standards, but not horribly loud either.

My Bosch SHU43C has lasted about 18 years. I had to replace the drain pump about five years ago. Fairly easy. It's a little fussy about food scraps, so I usually make sure plates etc that go in there are scraped free of such debris. This is probably because it doesn't have a little shredding thingie in the sump. BFD, that never worked all that well in the Frigidaire. The Frigidaire's plastic sump screen would warp in the heat, and then let debris into the recirculation system to clog the spray arms. The all stainless Bosch has never done that. I would avoid all plastic dishwashers, from my experience with the warping debris screen in the Frigidaire. I suppose I could have cut a stainless steel screen to replace it, but didn't think of that. It's in some junk pile by now.

I found a Kenmore ultra wash. My friend installed it for me. It works but is not cleaning the dishes. Since this is the 3rd used dishwasher in a row to do this, either I have incredibly bad luck picking dishwashers (it happened to me with refrigerators) or there's something wrong with the water pressure in my house.

My house was built at the end of the 1950s and did not originally have a dishwasher. I don't know if that matters.

Any suggestions short of replumbing the entire house?

Thank you.

Do you have hard water? If so, the water valve could be plugged up and underfilling the machine.

Let the dishwasher fill and stop the machine once it begins washing. Wait a minute or two to let the water completely drain and snap up a picture of the water level. We'll be able to help determine if it's underfilling.

Just to say, interpret that to mean for the pumped water to drain out of the spray arms so the visual in bottom of the tub is the full filled level.

Dishwashers typically fill properly on a range of water pressure between 20 and 120 psi.

How good are Miele dishwashers? Are they as good as Bosch? Are they even worth buying one over any Whirlpool made dishwasher?

Post# 1146563 , Reply# 22   4/14/2022 at 13:58 (742 days old) by givemehotwater (US)

Does anyone know how to remove the yellowing of the tub? I've noticed that a lot of the older Whirlpool Ultra Wash units in my area --- have iron staining, or yellow tubs. I'm just curious if there are ways to clean this up, so they can be kept in utilization.

Iron Out. Run an empty dishwasher with Iron Out in both dispensers and use the longest wash cycles selecting all heat options.

Periodically using a detergent that contains bleach will help with some stains.

How good are Miele dishwashers? Are they as good as Bosch?

We've never owned a Bosch, but I did take a "dead" 800 series Miele and put a new circ pump in it... used it for a number of years until the TOL one from the Miele showroom became available at a BOL "standard DW" price. It replaced a KA/Hobart KDS 18 or 19 that was dying. We've lost touch with the 800 machine (863?) but it went to a good home and I wouldn't be surprised if it's still running.

Also had a 2000 series that I did something to (minor) and had that for several years before the commercial Miele from the showroom became available... again at a BOL price. The 2000 is still running in our cousin's house.

The 800 series was probably 15-16 years old when I got it and the 2k was about 8-10 years old.

Miele machines like to be used, and like to be maintained (clean out the filter screens, etc.).

I can't speak for the new generation with the auto detergent feed as that was coming out just as Miele and I parted ways.

Hope this helps!

Chuck
