PhilR's Mom

Hi Automatic Washer friends:
Our good Frigidaire friend PhilR in Quebec hasn't been here for a long time now because he's been taking care of his Mom in his home 24/7 since her major stroke in July 2019. She was discharged from hospital and rehab care during the first Covid surge to keep her safe from rampant infections in nursing homes at that time and because the doctors basically had given up and wanted to put her in a nursing home permanently as they said that it was unlikely she would ever improve or be able to have her tracheostomy removed. PhilR stubbornly refused to believe them and moved her to his home to keep her safe. He's now been unable to leave his home for over 2 years except for quick trips to the store

With much hard work and rehab by him and professionals at home she can now swallow, sleep sometimes w/o a C-PAP, move her limbs to a limited degree, even write a bit and speak with difficulty, all things her doctors believed would be impossible. She could do none of this before discharge. While great improvements have been made, she's totally restricted to 1 floor of their 4 level home and it's very difficult to get to appointments because garage-outside access is 2 levels below. The stairs can't be adapted to a chair-lift due to their configuration. Phil bought a used adaptive van to transport her in a wheelchair but it requires manually taking the wheelchair up & down the stairs. His father is also living with them and has significant cardiac issues himself that have also required hospital care during the last 2 years.

The Canadian health system has covered most ICU and home care services but will pay "only" $20,000 CDN of the necessary $100,000+ that will be required to adapt the house for an elevator to give full access to the lower level which has a complete bathroom and space for a new bedroom and access to the garage for outside appointments.

The family's social worker proposed starting a Go Fund Me to help fund adapting the house to improve her access to medical care and the ability to just get out of the house in general.

Here's the link. Your help to ANY degree would be greatly appreciated.
Current exchange rate is 0.8 $CDN to 1.0 $US thus $25.00 CDN = $20.00 US, just FYI.
Many thanks for ANYthing you can do
in advance from PhilR & family.

Roger, this will get more exposure in Super, so I hope this is where it stays.

I can relate to Phil's situation, as I went through a similar scenario with Dave for almost ten years after his massive stroke -- until I had a TIA of my own and Dave's daughter said enough was enough and arranged for him to be placed into assisted living.  I was housebound for most of that time, with only an occasional brief respite.

Phil is dealing with so much more than I did.  Phil, if you're reading this, take care of yourself to the degree that you can.  I'll be making a donation and am urging anyone who can to do likewise.

Roger just told me he posted our GoFundMe here. I have to thank him for that! I wasn't too enthusiastic about asking people I know for that kind of help as we all have our issues to deal with but my mom's social worker, knowing what we went through and the issues we have to get my house adapted suggested that we would do that. Once we did, I was still not comfortable about sharing it and it took a small donation she did for me to share it with others. Since we did there were so many great things that happened, not just donations, it's been very encouraging.

I just want to say to everyone who reads this that I haven't vanished and I still have the same interest in appliances. I just don't have the time to search for more or to play much with them. But I can tell that my 1-18 set has been heavily used (4 loads a day in average) since my mom came to live here and knocking on wood, it's been doing fine. I just had to replace the dryer's heating elements once!

My mom is the one who has been into though times but things are slowly improving for her. She still has a lot of issues and feels prisoner of her body but I do everything I can to make her life more enjoyable. She's just 67 years old so we hope for more improvement.

For me, the worst has been fighting with people in the health system that's public but still far from perfect so she could come live with me and so we could get some services and medical checkups when needed... The healthcare system had stopped to try improving her condition and at some point when she was still hospitalized, they wouldn't even treat minor infections despite she had asked for maximum level of care... Healthcare workers couldn't stop asking that we lower it. They asked her and asked me and my father to do so repeatedly. We managed to have her trach removed despite of the recommendations of healthcare workers to keep it and she has improved a lot her condition since. She is still fed by a tube but 3 times a day rather than day and night and that has helped her too.

Roger and his wife Sue have been really supportive with me and Sue's medical knowledge helped me more than any advice from doctors here.

I still feel like I'm blessed to have my mom with me and fighting so hard to improve her condition.
