A conversation with our sons about Formula One and Nascar racing led to memories of go-karts. I had two. I first thought of the AMC Pacer gas powered car that I had when I was about nine. I remember my grandmother, at my insistence I'm sure, driving it to the end of our street and back. She was about 5'2" and 98 pounds soaking wet, but she still had to squeeze into the car.

The first was a rechargeable electric ride on car from 1971 or 72. I figured you can find almost anything online, and I searched for it. This car doesn't look exactly like I remember it, but I was four at the time. I am certain mine was purple, rechargeable and had foot shaped pedals. Once I found a name, I was able to get more results including a television ad. Once I heard the sound, I was sure--this was my car.

Of course, all of the kids in the ad are boys.

I well remember those being advertised in the 70's, and seeing younger kids riding around on them. I was way too old for one by that time. I think my cousin Kenny had the X-70 or similar when we visited them in California in 1972. He would have been 4 at the time.

Neither my sister or I ever had a go-cart, but had friends that did. My cousin Joanie had one, and we rode hers while visiting them. They had a track around the perimeter of their large backyard on the edge of Hattiesburg, MS. Other relatives in Mississippi have had tri-carts and quad runners at various times.

I remember them but as well was too old. The thing I would have like to have earlier, that my friend Eddy had was the Vroomm "motor" for my bike. Much better than a playing card and clothes pin on the spokes.
