Refresh my memory, dishwasher experts. Was this a P.O.S. or decent to own and use?

I have been away from aw.org a little while longer than I expected, so without searching the archives, someone can comment on this brand. It looks lightly used...I think.

This unit would have been TOL before GE ended Mobile Maid production IIRC.

Have similar unit just without wood block top.

Give them plenty of hot water (=/> 140 degrees F) and stand back. Will scrub chrome plating off metal! *LOL*. Mine's will actually shimmy about during operation, especially if under loaded or run empty.

Once you get racking/how to load sorted, these are very good machines far as top loading dishwashers are concerned.

Unlike KitchenAid top loading dishwashers Mobile Maid units did heat water during main wash. Though it's really more of maintaining temp because cycle is rather short. However that can be easily fixed by stopping machine when main wash ends, turning timer back to start of main wash, then letting it go again.

Thing is there isn't a temperature limit/stop with these machines. So will continue to heat water long as timer is in that portion of main wash cycle. Heater clicks off at end of main wash, and won't come on again until drying cycle.

Normal cycle on mine is "W-R-W-R-R-D"

China/Crystal skips first wash/rinse, then portion of dry.

Main objection is loading... If loading dishes say during day as they come, you cannot get to lower rack for plates and such without removing one top rack (one that doesn't lift with lid). This gets old after awhile.

Weakness for all these GE dishwashers was the "Plastisol" lining used for tubs. If it tears, cracks or otherwise becomes damaged unless repaired you'll have leaking and rust sooner or later. One dropped knife or other sharp kitchen tool is all it would take to knick this inner tub.

Some GE dishwashers (similarly to Whirlpool) had a gentle, low-speed spray for China/Crystal ... I believe garnered by either a half-fill or an aeration valve that opened, whichever method GE employed.

SIX pins, Dolores, not FIVE

Top loading Mobile Maids used a limited fill("three pints less than the UTILITY cycle") for the China/Crystal cycle. On the SU-70 models the DAILY WARE cycle was also run with a limited fill but used the heater with a longer cycle.

This model has the improved back top rack which does lift up and back slightly to facilitate loading plates on the bottom. People who used these machines got with a habit of filling the back of the bottom rack first to deal with that inconvenience. The earlier Mobile Maids and Pull-outs had a stationary top rack with a large gap in the center so loading the bottom racks was only a minor inconvenience. These dishwashers, especially those equipped with accessory cup racks, had a huge capacity because of their design and creative racking options. Only the top-loading Maytag portable, in my experience, held more stuff.

The big problem with these old machines, IMO, is in loading plastic items, even ones marked "dishwasher safe". In the old days, plastic things never went in the dishwasher because it was assumed that they wouldn't survive it. Now most of my stuff is sturdy plastic, but even they have their limits

It is impressive to pop the top of these dishwashers as they begin the DRY cycle. Even at 120 volts, that Calrod element glows impressively red hot and will melt any plastic item that sits above it or within a couple of inches. When I use my old Mobile Maid with plastics I run it on the China/Crystal cycle which doesn't juice the element during the WASH or RINSE cycles but, on some models, will turn it on for the first 5 minutes only of the DRY cycle, so read a manual and be careful.

The Plastisol problem is real but my family has owned and used 4 of these machines over a period of 40 years and none of them developed a rusted tub. My Mother was very careful when loading and we were trained to be careful as well. I've seen many KitchenAid dishwashers with porcelain-on-steel tubs that were chipped and beginning to rust. I would propose that before American dishwashers were manufactured with stainless steel tubs, being careful with an appliance that began its career as a luxury item was expected; users needed to treat them with some care and not like American Tourister Gorilla props.
