Actually that Panasonic washer was available in the early 90's and was impeller based if I remember right. I did see it in person at a store in Maine back then and thought the very same thing when looking at it that it was Whirlpool based, but its not. Whirlpool had nothing to do with this Japanese built washer by Matsushita if I recall right.

A Panasonic washing machine in the US!? That is so cool and awesome for me:) I am a diehard Panasonic fan! Was there a matching dryer that ever did came with this when those were sold back in the day? I'm now curious to know, I'm also curious to know where this washer was made at if someone can shed some light here:) But if I were to take a wild guess here, it could've been built either by themselves in Japan or it could've been built by Whirlpool in the US. The reason why I think it could've been built by Whirlpool is because Panasonic has had a deal with them before. At least from their vacuum division line. Whirlpool in 1990 sold their plant in Danville Kentucky to Matsushita aka Panasonic and continued making vacuums for not only Kenmore but for themselves as well. It's possible that since the purchase, Panasonic probably wanted to expand their home appliance line so they might've reached out to Whirlpool to see if they could see themselves in the US laundry market just as much as Kenmore. But I guess maybe it didn't work out well as they hoped? I honestly don't know but that's just a guess.

Panasonic actually for a hot minute tried to launch a full-line of regular-sized US appliances right around 1990. Don't believe this item was necessarily part of it--they had stoves, dishwashers, and refrigerators (the stove I recall was one with the heating elements in cast-iron plates). They sourced the units from various of the manufacturers in the US/Canada.
