My grand old lady is suffering again, and before I call out my man (who I'm sure secretly hates me) I'm turning to you guys for advice again.

I have a 30-year old Hoover Logic 1000 which I love and adore, and is normally brilliant - apart from the odd glitch here and there. (The last glitch was the timer, and it was only by coming here was I able to find a new one - thanks Chris!)

- For a couple of weeks, I've noticed a small leak after washes and I identified this as coming from underneath. I didn't worry too much and bought a tray to stand her in. (This may be irrelevant of course.)

- Then the next thing to happen was the spin being missed out of washes (again). I got round this by just running a G spin after the washes, which did the trick. I must admit these spins have been noisier than usual - the last one sounded as if there was a small bag of gravel in there!

- But today - this didn't work! :-( I ran a G spin but although the machine made its normal 'swishing' noise, nothing actually happened - the drum stayed put and didn't go round. After standing watching it for a while, I decided that nothing WAS going to happen, so I ended up just dragging the dripping washing out of the machine, and heaving it outside to hang on the line.

Clearly something must be done urgently, and I most likely will have to call out my man on Monday. (And of course he'll tell me to buy a new machine, like he always does! And I always say, "Find me a hot fill one and I will" - stalemate!)

The first thing that sprang to mind was the timer again (due to missing out the spins - this is why I had to get one before) - but the timer that went in last time was actually a brand new one? It was installed in 2017, but I'm not a careless user and try to wash only once a week (although sometimes twice or more in good weather). Having said that, I didn't use the machine at all while I had Covid, but since then I've been giving her a bit of a hammering to catch up - perhaps I've been overworking her?

I'm not an engineer so don't ask me if I've examined my brushless motors or anything like that (I wouldn't know what I was looking at even if I did get the top off, lol) - but I would very much appreciate some advice off the top of your heads as to what it might be. The missing spins could well be due to the timer, but as I said, it was new when installed? (And I don't like the fact like that running a spin on its own isn't working - I'm now frightened to do another wash!)

Any help gratefully received - and @ServisChris, are you still out there?!

(PS. The link below is to my previous post about the timer.)

I’m no expert on front loaders, but...

It sounds like you might have a problem in the basket drive system, be it the motor, belt, bearings, or spider arm. Does the motor still sound like it’s still revving up when you set it to spin? Does the basket still move when set to wash? Can the basket be turned by hand? Those noisy spins and leak sound like the bearings and seal going out to me. I’ve seen this happen in several washers over the years. It’s a pretty major repair, but it can be done. Good luck getting it fixed!

Logic washer help

Morning Jaycey sorry to hear you are having problems again, and appreciate that you cannot maintain the Hoover yourself

The leak may be a pipe torn or from the backplate seal , without seeing it or with the back off while working it could be anywhere, not uncommon on a 30 yr old machine,

The spin issue seems finnicky, get your tech guy to check out the motor brushes ? that the pressure pot is clear ? and also that the belt hasnt now snapped as you now say it makes motor sounds ? (or is it the pump on only ?) with no drum movement or motor only turning ?

Having a vintage washer used as a daily driver does require a small amount of regular maintenance, and obviously most original parts are now obselete.

If you feel your local tech engineer guy has limited knowledge working on this vintage Hoover Logic washer and you wish to keep it working then why not request the work carried out by Chris,
he is a fully qualified engineer with his own business and may as well pay good money to his business rather than a tech who only repairs modern washer.

Good luck with your repairs and let us know how you get on. !!

Cheers, Mike

Hi Mike & Jane,

Jane, we've been in touch since. Hoping I will have another timer.

Mike, thanks for the suggestion, the thought had crossed my mind also. I have offered to repair it myself or uplift it and renovate it at home to futureproof it for years of service to follow. Adress the leak, rust treat the drum, new brushes etc as well as sorting the potential timer issue.

Guess I'd better get searching in the loft!

Thanks all - yes, Chris and I have been in touch and we're currently talking about this.

@chestermikeuk - thanks for your points. It was interesting that you said "having a vintage washer used as a daily driver does require a small amount of regular maintenance" - until I found this site, I never thought of Lady Logic as 'vintage', she was just my normal washing machine (that I've been using for 30 years - OK, then, I get it!). :D However, since I was here before, I have been trying to wash once a week if I can manage it (there's only the two of us). The only time the machine gets used more than that is if there's good drying weather outside, and then I try and get all outstanding bedding and towels done (because I love line-dried laundry). Over the last week or so, I have given her a bit of a hammering because the weather has been so good - and so now I guess she's complaining! ;-) (Arthriticky old joints - a bit like her owner, lol.)

My poor old tech! :D I suppose he does only mend modern washers, because those are the only ones he ever sees these days? (The reason I use him is because he used to work for his dad, who had been an old Hoover engineer and taught him everything he knew. So he does have some knowledge, and in fact was about the only tech that would even come out to look at mine when she started to go play up about 15 years ago. But he does groan a bit when I ring - which isn't very often at all, to be honest - he knows it's not going to be an easy job!)

Anyway, I'm now waiting with baited breath for Chris to turn his loft out! ;-)

I hope you will be able to have your washer repair and working again because its best to have it repair most modern washers do not last long and not all companys accept to repair these days since they will mostly tell to replace know by experiance had a 17 year old duet washer dryer set dryer breaks call to have a repair no return of call so they where replace hope for you in your case it will not be that path tand that you will have your washer repair so all i can say is good luck
