John, clogging of inlet valves (screens), faucets, showers does occur. As I've mentioned several times, one of RJ's rental houses in an old neighborhood and rust/debris is dislodged from the city utility infrastructure there whenever work is done on the mains. The dishwasher inlet there has clogged twice, leading to tenant complaints that the dishwasher isn't working. I diassembled and cleaned it both times (no leaking occurred). The alternative would been replace the valve twice in 5 years, which doesn't seem reasonable. Everyone, everywhere doesn't operate under ideal water supply conditions. |

Hi Glenn, I certainly know that it is possible for a screen to clog on a dishwasher inlet valve, it’s an extremely rare occurrence however.
I change at least one inlet valve a week and I don’t remember seeing a clogged one in the last five years. In order for the screen to clog it would have to be 100% covered and about a quarter inch thick, by the time you have that much gunk in the DW valve everything in the house would be clogged up. If you have that type of water problems a whole house water filter should be installed to prevent all kinds of plumbing problems even toilet valves will stick with that much stuff getting in them. I put a whole house incoming water filter in about 10 years ago when they were replacing all the water lines in this neighborhood as a precaution. I did change the filter last year for the first time in 10 years it wasn’t significantly clogged, and I doubt I’ll have to change it again In the next 20 years.
