Does anyone know where I can find the gulmite wrench for the tub bolts? Preferably without having to pay 50 or 60 bucks for it.

Use channel locks to remove them and replace with standard bolts.

Yeah, I've seen those. I just want to *try* to salvage the originals.. if I could find/buy/borrow/rent the tool 😂

Someone might yet show up here with the proper tool to loan you. I seem to remember a gulmite wrench being passed around from one to another on this forum.

Those stainless steel bolts and washers --

hobbyapocalypse's profile picture
Are they exactly like the ones Maytag used in later model wringer washers?

It looks like each washer has some sort of rubber pad to go against the tub, but is any water seal needed between the bolt heads and washers? Or are the pads there mainly to prevent a corrosive reaction between the steel and aluminum?

That would be awesome. I'll be patient, I'd really like to save them.

This whole machine looks to be original.
As far I can tell, it's just a rubber like washer under each one.

Wow, looks like it still has the cast aluminum agitator.

There should be external oil ports on that motor (looks original) so it's easy to service without completely disassembling it unlike the later motors.

Yep, we love our teardown and repair pics. Not nosy, just interested.

So, the tub is leaking. Seal and bolts.
I'm glad yall are interested.. I may need advice 😂 as soon as I get the tool I'll start documenting!
Also, more info on this external oil port you speak of?

You'll want to study this rebuild thread when you have a spare hour or two. Loads of great information!

I read that about 2am a few nights ago. I took alot of notes on my notepad and book marked the page. Amazing re build.
Glad I found this site.
I actually have another machine just like this one.. serial numbers date them both coming out of the factory the same month/year. The other one is just in a little rougher shape. But it washes like a champ.

Don't know what happened here, but credit to whoever did it, it doesn't leak there.

I went ahead and replaced the belt, triple checked, it is a legit replacement..
but it is too tight to run. Can the tension on these be adjusted? I have read til my eyeballs hurt and can't find the info I need.. or am just missing it somewhere.
obviously, I am not mechanically inclined, any advice is greatly appreciated.

Obtaining a service manual is an absolute must.

Our webmaster has a service manual available from 1957 but I believe it goes more into detail with the gray ghost machines and doesn't touch upon belt adjustments on the EJN washers.

www.automatice.org/cgi-bi...

Maytag produced a manual later on that goes into detail specifically for the EJN wringers only. I don't believe the webmaster has this available (I don't see it) out of respect for Dave at Dave's Appliances. You can purchase the manual from Dave.

If it is too tight the belt is too small, the weight of the motor supplies enough tension to keep it from slipping.

That makes sense, I picked up 31" belts.. against the old belt it is probably a half an inch smaller, but a whole lot tighter on the pulleys.. Should I try 32, 33 ?

qsd_dan. Thanks! I purchased those manuals from Dave a couple weeks ago. I was emailing him about some parts, he hasn't responded lately. Definitely studying the manuals.

I thought I needed the ring.. I was wrong.
Now I have to cancel that and find a gasket.

has anyone replaced this with anything besides cork?
would another material be better?

Also, just learned that the center plates on my machines are not the same..
Is it safe to assume..ha.. that the one without the clip is the original, since this machine is close to original..
and the one with the clip has been changed out, since that machine looks to have been pieced together.

Center plate changes

swestoyz's profile picture
The cup style center seal assembly was used up through ‘54 on automatics and I believe shortly prior to for wringers. The washer/spring clip style was then used up through ‘93 when Maytag revised the stem assembly with the integrated lip seal.

Both are fine and can be refurbished with a new A4298 center seal. Reuse the copper gasket with the cup; both the washer/spring clip can be reused, as well.

Dirt dobber nest removal.
Fresh, grounded power supply.
Cleaning up buildup around the bolt holes inside and out.
Runs very quietly. Agitator doesn't make a sound, neither does wringer head..
I think when I get a gasket going I will put this one back together with new bolts/washers, run some leak tests, and if everything is ok here then get started tearing down the other one since it's loud, rusty, and greasy.

Return of Gulmite Wrench

Hi Adrian,

I was wondering if you could return that gulmite wrench. I need to take the transmission out of my NX Bluebell.

Thanks,

Bill Sauder
