So my 1957 picture-window KitchenAid dishwasher after 15 years of use has developed a leak so off to the basement it goes for a few months for a complete overhaul.
As a "temp" I just found this never used, still in it's box Bottom of Line Whirlpool dishwasher from 1985/1986. I will be fun to use for a few months and then off it goes as it doesn't go in my kitchen. At least there is no woodgrain on it! All I saw in the FB Marketplace posting was a picture of the box so I had absolutely no idea what was on the inside. I brought it home and ran it's first load last night. Everything came out clean albeit a noisy little machine with minimal outside sound insulation. | ||

Exciting.
It's probably not absolue BOL given the fact that it is W-o-W and it also looks like it has interchangeable color panels for the front.(?)
If I remember correctly the absolute BOL would have had a black plastic control panel with a aluminum control panel insert and it only came in white with a preformed aluminum lower access panel and the knob would have been chrome with a black center. The rest would most likely be the same. Yes, classic performer from Whirlpool. I've no doubt they made millions of these and a significant percentage of new apartments, condos, and starter homes built in the 70s into the 90s had a version of this. Does it have the rear wheels Robert, to make it easier to install? I also like the Whirlpool door latch. It's so simple yet affective. No clunky slide bar like a Kenmore or GE, and no lift up handle like a KA. Robert with that plastic door.... it would be much easier to cut a window into this, just saying. And maybe you could do a little experiment with a decibel meter app on your phone. Find the reading with it as is installed. Then get some spray foam, take the DW outside and apply your own custom sound insulation blanket. Once it's reinstalled test it again and see what the difference is.

Trust me if it wasn't brand new in the box it wouldn't have come anywhere near this house much less get installed in the Kitchen. Nothing like the smell of a brand new 38 year old dishwasher. It will make a good temp however and I don't have to rush to fix the KitchenAid. Love the blue racks however, blue racks are a thing of the past for sure. Capacity wise it's about the same as the Roto-rack as the center tube in the lower rack does reduce it a bit.
Robert installed a dishwasher with more than one wash arm? Does the upper spray tube in the '65 Lady Kenmore Roto-rack count Dan lol??? also looks like it has interchangeable color panels for the front.(?) No it's just one thin sheet metal panel without any color changes. No rear wheels either, just four leveling legs. It's probably not absolue BOL given the fact that it is W-o-W I'm positive it is absolute BOL. Here is the entire 1980 line of Whirlpool dishwashers and my 1985 matches the bottom of the line 1980 machine with the exception of the colors and knob.

Oh I'm sorry Dan. For what it's worth I also dissed my babe - Kenmore.
I like the KA handle better than the slide locks. It is like a step up and reminds me of lifting the door handle and opening the door to a 1984 Lincoln towncar, Grand Marquis, or Crown Vic. Solid. Yet the Whirlpool easy press handle is almost Tesla-esque. See what I'm saying here? It's just different worlds. Don't even get me started in analyzing how far over the tracks the GE and Kenmore slide handles were.

WOW BOL 1986 WP DW Hi Robert, this should do the job well, but once I got used to the power-clean pump system and temperature hold in the main wash I would never want to permanently go back to one of these.
However when you get done with it I would like to buy it from you to replace one of my DU8000XR PC machines, I would put a PC pump in it along with the controls from mine and the in door silverware basket, mine are showing some water after 35+ years of use.

That dishwasher will clean very well. I had one in a condo my ex and I were renting. Yeah its a bit noisy but this dishwasher can move a good amount of water thru that wash system , like 50 gallons per minute. It does not heat the water or maintain water temps. The silverware basket is a ample in size if I recall right and granted it isn't in the door but this dishwasher will hold a good sized load. The cycles are not long either. As long as your water heater temp is set at 140F and the run is short to the dishwasher it will do well.
Where I lived in Maine where the condo was, Portland's water came from Sebego Lake and was naturally soft so there was no need for rinse aid to be used. I dont know how the water conditions are there but I am assuming if its anything like Chicago's a rinse aid is needed. Here in Florida a rinse aid is definitely needed. | ||

Look at the model line up in #7
Do you see any door handles/latches/grab bars...anything? No. It's sleek. Just under the control panel in the center.
Back then it seems like Whirlpool was the only one with that kind of handle. ------- Robert, "Trust me if it wasn't brand new in the box it wouldn't have come anywhere near this house ..." We wouldn't expect anything less. When reports start coming through that you've taken to perusing the trade-ins in the back alley of the Lowes store we'll know it's time to pull the metaphoric plug on you. "I'm positive it is absolute BOL." Yes, I know functionally it was BOL. Back then, (I used to get the GE and Whirlpool appliance catalogs each year) with some models, usually the most BOL, they would offer it in different trim lines. GE used to do this with their most BOL gas stove too. Some would be standing pilot, some would have a light, some had a bottom drawer, some had two oven racks vs. one. But it was all the same model. What I'm saying is you've got a more deluxe BOL model.

Reply # 18 Hi Robert, correct it just drops in you can even use the same wash arms or you can drop in the later PC pup and motor that has the extra filter under the lower wash arm.
I have the older system in both my DWs and they work great.
With the PC pump and motor you can add the tuning weight that takes all the motor hum out.

It's odd there is no sign of white on white in the brochure and the BOL control dial has a marking for light wash where as my machine has no extra cycle markings what so ever, just pull to start. Maybe my machine is a 1986 model?
As for the reversible color panel on the door I confirmed my suspicion that there is none. I pulled one of the side supports off and sure enough it is simply a white wrap around panel with no way to reverse that panel...

When we moved into our home in ‘94 the DW was a BOL Whirlpool that the sellers bought in ‘91 when they moved into our unit. It was really a very good DW. It had an Almond front panel with a black control panel and bottom panel under the door. I didn’t realize until we’d been here for a while that the panels were changeable when I was cleaning the sides of the door. Underneath the Almond panel, separated by sheets of cardboard were both a black and also a white panel. Once I learned about this I would change them out just for the hell of it.
The only reason I got rid of this DW in 2000 was because the racks were rusting. Also it was pretty loud. But as DW’s go, if was very fast, completing a load in under an hour and cleaned better that the more expensive Maytag MOL that I replaced it with. And the Maytag’s racks began to rust as soon as it was out of warranty and it was just as loud as the WP that it replaced. I think that this DW was a great find Robert. Sometimes simple is much better. Most people use only the basic cycle anyway. Plus with this DW you can set it to only rinse the dishes if you want, just by turning the dial. Eddie | ||

It's great you've found this old NEW stock dishwasher. I don't know how you do it. You find amazing stuff. It's awesome.
We all can agree its solid BOL Whirlpool. It will perform great. And they made this dishwasher for several years. Pic is from Fall 91 they still had colored appliances with the black control panels and trim but were starting to add W-o-W. I'm not sure what the official perameters are.

Buzzzz the NOS dishwasher is now dead! Barely 70 days use and today the motor just hums and in about 2 seconds cuts out on the motor protector. I suspect it's the motor relay. Does anyone know if a Kitchenaid DW or GE washer motor relay will work in this machine? I'm making an assumption that this DW has an external motor relay I haven't gone in an looked yet.
If it's not the relay then the motor is locked up for some reason, although I kind of doubt that is the problem. | ||

Likely has a locked up or stuck motor, relay is in console but is not likely bad, I have boxes of them if you want me to send one.
Carefully try turning the fan inside the bottom of motor to see if it is locked up, you can use an Allen wrench if you want.
Might be time to up-grade to a Power-Clean module.

I love, love love simple machines like this! Especially when they are as well built as this machine.
It is possible this model was a builder or contract model. I know GE offered various BOL machines in bulk to home builders that could not be purchased by consumers. Could also be a custom model for a particular store as when price matching was/is involved. I'm with John, I'm tempted to say you should install a power clean module. The filtration and particle disposal is next level. And yes, I remember that metal tuner in Kenmore machines. Question- is the wiring diagram and cycle sequence pasted to the inner door? ;) Keep us up to date on this machine, I like it! <3 | ||

So I investigated this issue. John I could not find any motor fan at the bottom of this square motor however when I had the motor out I found a water slinger on top of the motor that I could have tested turning the rotor shaft with. So first I took off the spray arm and diffuser and the motor started to work again. There was nothing unusual like foreign waste under the diffuser so I'm not sure what was going on.
What confused me about the diffuser is it seems to have three parts the main diffuser top, a disk below that is aligned by little plastic dowel pins and a round rubber seal. It seems the plastic disk just sits under diffuser top and is not securely connected to the diffuser dowel pins same with the ring seal. I ended up having to take the motor out to reinstall the diffuser assembly because I couldn't turn it down without the disk and seal falling out and not being properly aligned. I did get it all back together and ran a test load, the first wash, rinse and second wash went just fine, it drained after the second wash and the motor was locked up again for the 1st rinse. I have no idea what is causing the motor to lock up. But now I can barely turn the shaft via the water slinger now. I suspect something in that diffuser may be defective. Update to thread: I just took the diffuser off again and took some pictures. Pict 1 shows that disk is stuck to the impeller preventing it from turning. Pict 2 and 3 shows the three parts. In Pict 3 you can see how the impeller has scraped up the bottom of the disk. I'm pretty sure that disk is not supposed to separate from the housing. I looked up the part number 301559 and that doesn't come up anywhere. I wonder if I can bond the disk to the housing? This post was last edited 11/01/2022 at 15:05 | ||

Neat problem That white desk that’s under the top housing is supposed to be permanently heat welded in place, it came loose and fused on to the wash impeller.
Never saw this happen before that’s the fun thing about this business is always something unusual that you see every week.
Robert you can either glue or refuse it back together or I can send you the entire top of the pump assembly we have lots of them laying around I never saw nothing Anything ever happened to one, at least until you got one lol

Thanks John, yeah I used JB Plastic weld on the where the disk meets the dowels so hopefully that will solve the problem permanently. Thanks as always for the info and offer of a good used one!
Question just out of sheer curiosity would a power clean module fit in a 69 Whirlpool?
