About a year ago my friend came to stay and brought this old lady to stay !!! She was in need of a little care and work … This has been a team restore with a friend doing the welding and fan blower bearing replacement .Another friend doing the detaining for the dials and the badge .Mathew who gave me the machine was brilliant and helped me strip the machine down and understand the workings and giving some really good solutions to the missing parts The door seal was derelict beyond saving and as I’ve a few of these machines I had some new seals made … To be honest the machine is really quite rare and is the last bolt down washer dryer made by Bendix for the UK market …The fan drive had been removed and there was little to no chance of finding the parts so we had another motor fitted to drive the fan unit …
Hope this is interesting

A really lovely Bendix

slowspin66's profile picture
I know it’s not 100% original but as there are a few Bendix machines here I wanted to have the machine fit into the line up so I changed the colour from
White to cream. Bendix offered both colour ways in the UK so we’re not totally none standard !!over the years I’ve worked on these machines I’ve had most of the internals sand blasted and powder coated . In my opinion the pumps / sumps and smaller parts that handle water are 100% protected . The chassis and back panels that can get damp and easily knocked during a service I’ve had powder coated . So we’re not totally original but to build longevity into a machine that’s over 60 years old I think is useful .

Bendix Bolt down combination washer dryer

combo52's profile picture
This is very cool Darren never even saw one of these.

We never had a bolt down combination washer dryer in the US although you could argue that the GE’s and/or the easy combination should’ve been bolted down as they had virtually no suspension.

Are you using this one yet what’s the performance like what’s the total wash dry time and how big a load will it handle on a complete wash dry cycle.

Can’t wait to get over there again And see some of these machines in person this coming year might be a good year for travel not sure yet.

Impressive restoration, Darren! You were able to overcome many obstacles that would cause many to throw in the towel.

It's fun to see how these were put together when comparing to their US made bolt-down cousins. So much is the same but yet there are little details where things are totally different.

It's also fascinating that the early B211/B212 cabinet from 1950 through 1955 in the US was used all the way through the early 60's in the UK.

By chance to you have any pictures you could share of the rear with the back service panel, removed? I'm curious to see how the blower is arranged/driven.

Thank you!

Ben

Fan blower

slowspin66's profile picture
Thanks Ben for the comments . It’s the most complex machine I’ve worked on to be honest but these photos are of the back panel and as you can see the the fan blower is mounted on the back panel and then you offer the panel up to the back of the machine .. because I put another motor on the machine it was all very tight with the pulley and the motor … hope this helpful

TrioMatic

vacbear58's profile picture
This Triomatic seems to have been pretty much the last gasp for this style of Bendix washer, variations of which - both automatic and semi automatic - had been produced here from around 1946. Introduced in 1961, by 1964 it was superseded by the Bendix LT (with tumble dryer) and LA (no dryer) - these seem to have been much more like the Philco Bendix front loading models that the US had from around 1959/60. Below is a Which report (August 1962) which compares it to the English Electric Liberator which was introduced around late 1959 or early 1960 (based on Westinghouse Spacemate) and the Hoover Keymatic introduced in 1961

Alistair, thank you for including the Which report. Going to take me a while to fully digest all of it.

Priceless

I’ve seen Darren’s restorations and they are amazing ! That machine would be worth £ 3367 in todays money to buy. Which at todays exchange rate I’d just under $4000 US dollars!
