Hello all-

Inherited a Maytag Neptune TL from my widowed mother. Serial # comes back as a 2004 model. Everything seems to function ok...no odd sounds. I really don't like it. It tends to twist everything up, clothes smell like detergent, or, come out smelling all musty.

What is the trick to get this machine to clean clothes well?

Stinky front load washer

Try running some washer cleaner through it to get some of the gunk out of the machine.

In general you should only use a hot wash and a cold rinse setting on this machine for everything.

At least one and 10 loads should have liquid chlorine bleach in the bleach dispenser.

Use a good detergent always use an extra rinse setting.

If the machine is pretty smelly it may take a few months for it to start to smell decent.

Neptune TL runs full tap-hot on the Hot setting per my experience with mine serial Dec 2005 ... so perhaps be careful with hot water on fabrics that may actually be sensitive.  Choose Warm in those instances.

Everybody here knows I love my scalding hot temps but no way will I wash my darks in hot water or anything much above 85F.

As with any TL, don't wrap clothes around the agitator when loading.

Other than that, I don't know if Neptunes are known for twisting clothes any more than other TLs for some reason?

if this is the maytag neptune TL with the 2 rotating disks, there might be a bunch of mold or residue built up behind them. run a few cycles on the longest setting with bleach, it should do a bit of good to remove the buildup.

Also, leave the lid open between uses, should help dry it out and mitigate the smell.

Neptune TL

Use 1 cup of citric acid on a wash that runs a higher water level, like Bulky, using hot. That should remove a lot of gunk. Then run a bleach cycle. Hope that helps.

Yup...the one with the discs

Yes. This machine has the two rotating agitator discs. Does a fine job of twisting all the clothes together.
