Is this a 1960?

Amazing that the bleach storage/dispensing system has not caused the cabinet to rust out. It must not have been used.

Should be about a 1961 GE washer it’s a nice shape for its age obviously sat for about the last 50 years without being used.

Has a GE factory rebuilt transmission in it although long ago.

We had the exact same machine not sure where it went might’ve gone to Jon Charles in Boston ?

Be a fun machine for a GE fan probably could get it much cheaper than they’re asking.

Definitely 1961.  We have at least one member who swoons over this model!  I can't access the listing, but it looks like it's in fabulous shape!

Nice find! Go get it Paul. It’s been a long time since a GE of this vintage popped up for sale and in good condition as well. Looks like the original metal pump. This machine must’ve sat unused for many years as mentioned.

Dan - you took the words out of my mouth, LOL.

Yet another example that this stuff is still out there. Ohio/Michigan seems to have delivered on the rare stuff in the last year or so. To Melvin's point, it's amazing that the original pot metal pump is still on the machine. Seeing the original blue Filter Flo pan is also a pleasant surprise.

Beautiful machine!

I wasn't surprised to read that it's a TOL model as it appears to be highly automated.

I hope somebody nabs this one.  The matching dryer must be out there somewhere.

1961, my favorite vintage

This does look to be in great condition. I'm very tempted to initiate a bidding war with my worthy opponent... this is a fabulous machine that I've coveted for a long time but I'm conflicted given that I have to get rid of many machines with a house renovation ahead of me.

I have the 1960 version of this "Piano Key" TOL which has the notorious Bleach Dispenser, but, even better, it has the old automatic RINSE dispenser included with the 58, 59 and 60 TOL's.  I will never understand GE's thinking from back then: as nifty as that bleach dispenser looks on paper, the rinse dispenser on the 1960 T model is far more useful and not destructive to the appliance. Why they discontinued it as they introduced the V-12's doesn't make a lot of sense. I know GE eventually offered an activator-mounted softener dispenser for the later perf-tub models that didn't need to stop in the middle of the first spin, but I don't think it showed up until the mid Sixties.

Is this model still have a solid tub? And does it have the mini basket?

Pete, it's the first year of the perf-tub GE Filter-Flo, but the mini-basket only came along in 1963, I believe.

Yes for the '62 line they moved the filter-flo flume to the 1:30 position and used a rubber flume...

I'm just wondering how the solid tubs measured water level to control the water valve? Timed fill?

The solid tubs had a pressure diaphragm in the outer tub of those machines except the earliest models that had cork a float to measure overflow water. No GE automatic ever had a time fill that I'm aware of.

But then what about how are a solid tub washer would fill

So does it fill up enough The water overflow from the inner tub into the outer tub? And then does it start to wash/rinse?

So there was only one water level: full tub?

And no mini-wash tub in those?

Yes exactly a few gallons and it starts to agitate, the few gallons ensures water recirculation.

So there was only one water level: full tub?
No most have a water saver button on the control panel you can manually push to start agitation, although you will obviously have no filtering. Some of the center drain agitators on the early GE models have a movable plug on the agitator that moves up and down to control the water level.

Update, here is how the agitator mounted water level system works:

Sooooo.... did anyone here get it?  My contact in Ohio reached out to the seller and got his hand bit off... Seller was an obnoxious jerk, kinda like the one in Milwaukee who wanted thousands for unextrordinary machines and said he'd scrap them if he didn't sell them.

Thank-you for that Robert.
I had no idea. Learn something new everyday.

Though a bit convoluted, it was a step toward progress and evolution.
It does seem like the workings in there would get gunked up with lint or soap scum.
Very creative though.

---

Paul, I wonder if your friend had a difficult time because the washer sold quicker than the seller thought it would and the seller was having sellers remorse. He was wishing he'd sold it for more.

Changed late in 1961

bajaespuma's profile picture

I was surprised when I saw the first V model with the 12:00 flume when I joined this website some 15 years ago. I guess it was a hold-over from the solid-tub days and being built into the porcelain on steel top, was more expensive to manufacture and more prone to rusting.

The Filter-Flo Flume (say that 5 times) was re-positioned to the 1:30 position for later versions of the 1961 V-line models. I have a few 1961 washers where this is true and the first '61 washer I ever knew, a WA-750V back in 1961 when we moved into our new house, was identical to our 1962 WA-750W except for the colors of the control panel and filter pan, and a back-lit control dial (which was also eliminated because if/when users interrupted the cycle {to do a soak for example} those dials melted from no movement and the heat of the bulb). Pity; I coveted that beautiful blue machine.

All GE washers had porcelain finish tops

combo52's profile picture
Because the top forms the top of the outer tub they would’ve had horrible rust problems if they used something cheaper would not of made any difference whether the filter flow flume was in the 12 o’clock or 130 position, later 24 inch GE’s had the Filter Flow flume at the 7 o’clock position. As did the commercial washers that had a removable front.
