Picked up this 1963 GE Combination Frost Guard this morning. "But Uncle Kenny, how do you know it's 1963?" The original sales receipt came with it, sold on 6/10/63, for $475.00, plus $22.00 for the ice maker. "Ice Maker, uncle Kenny?" Yes, that's what it says. I would rate this refrigerator an 8/10. Interior is pretty much mint, including the warranty decal, the outside has some discoloraton on the sides, and a small dent in the chrome. "Did you say ice maker?" Yes I did. "But does it work?" Plugged it in, it lit up inside, but didn't start. Anyone know if this has a defrost timer? I didn't look, after putting it in the barn.

This goes to show they are still out there, this was on the trade in pile at a dealer. $475.00 was a considerable amount back then, plus $22.00 for the ice maker.

$475.00 was a considerable amount back then,

With the ice maker $4810 adjusted for inflation to be exact.

Could I have bought a Subzero back then?

And if I too am lucky enough to have a barn full of retro appliances will I also start speaking of myself in 3rd person?

And are there pics of this barn collection for us to drool over? Is the barn heated to protect them?

The more important question is, could you afford the repairs on the Subzero?

GE frost guard refrigerator 1963

A dual evaporator model that’s not running. Most likely thing is either a bad cold control or there is a defrost timer problem, it is located in the ceiling of the freezer that you could access by just pulling out and lifting the drawer out.

It’s neat that the interior is completely intact and even still has the label on the inside of the refrigerator lighter I do hope that you got your warranty statement when you bought this considering how much she paid for it, lol

I hope you go ahead and check it out let me know what you find.

What a beautiful find!  And a left-hand door, too.  Congratulations on this one for sure.

And just look at that fabulous handwriting on the sales slip.  Talk about classic penmanship - hubba hubba!

Furthermore, a look back in time with the phone number  GLobe 7 - 3744.  I think the sales receipt is as rare and worth oogling about as is the refrigerator.

Thanks, John, wasn't sure on the timer. Sounds easy enough to check.

"You see, the ice cubes flip right out of their trays."

"Incessantly?"

"Only when you want them to."

Nice find!
I hope you can get it sorted out.

Lawrence,
You beat me to it. I too was impressed with the receipt, and especially the handwriting!

The "Mid-Atlantic accent" that no one outside of a theatre or production studio ever spoke with.
