Found this in an area I am traveling through. Wondering if this is worth it? It works, cheap and I was wanting a Superba, but I am not sure if this unit is “too new” or if this unit was one of the ones made shortly after Whirlpool acquired KA.. can someone help me? I read that Whirlpool added the “power clean” function to chop the food and send it down the drain. White unit is what is available, golden harvest picture is unit I was looking for.

The white one is basically the same design but depending on its model number it could have the Hobart system or the improved Whirlpool power module system you referenced. The white machine also has an upper and lower wash arm, while the gold machine has just a single wash arm at the bottom of the machine, requiring careful loading of the bottom rack to make sure the spray reaches the top rack.
It's a toss up regarding which machine is more desirable for a daily driver. The gold machine is 100% Hobart, and certain parts for it may still be available through Hobart. You'll be at Whirlpool's mercy if you need parts for the white machine, but most parts for either machine are no longer available. |

Okay thanks! Good to know about the bottom arm and I appreciate the help. I really want a KA just not sure which to go for! I also found this one… which seems to be in the middle of them… Thank you both for the input.

We’re very well-built and reliable machines.
They were not however the best performers of their day, KitchenAid had gone to one final rinse and they also didn’t have any guaranteed temperature in either the main wash or the final rinse cycle so cleaning performance was not top of the line. We were factory service for both whirlpool and KitchenAid at this time and we had a number of customers who did not like the cleaning of these 21 and 22 machines compared to their older KitchenAid dishwashers. We actually took a number of these new KitchenAid’s back and gave them a whirlpool dishwasher which cleaned much better to satisfy the customer in both cleaning and drying ability. John L |

So I am leaning towards the black one, will have it delivered from its home for about $700 (wow). I am unsure on how to exactly tell the model number, the owner didn’t send a picture of that, but I have more pictures from the owner. The unit itself is $90.. I wish I knew exactly what it is. One of the commenters, John, said they put Whirlpool motors in them, not sure if he was referring to the black middle or green as I would think the whisper quiet model should be a Hobart design with the Whirlpool motor?

Well, $800 seems like lot to me. Assuming you're not in a seriously remote part of the state, there's a good chance that a KitchenAid will show up within driving distance if you're able to wait.
In picture #3 of the black Superba interior, just inside the door above the lower rack you can see a gray strip (it's actually silver). That is the model information sticker. Ask the seller to take a picture of it.
Also, you could include an In-Sink-Erator (ISE) "Classic Supreme" dishwasher in your search. They are handsome KitchenAid clones from the period you're interested in. They did not offer the high temperature "sani-cycle" wash and rinse like the Superbas, but are otherwise comparable. The only visible differences are the door latch, which KitchenAid required ISE to redesign for their machines, the buttons and indicator lights. I had an ISE for several years (pictured -- I switched its black panels out for stainless) until I found a deal on a pre-owned Miele that was too good to pass up.

I am not in a SUPER remote area but in I am in Northern CA where it seems like many people throw these away. Well CA in general doesn’t seem to have much in the way of vintage items. I have been looking for months and nothing too close to me. Which is why I am considering the shipping because I don’t want to miss out!! I wasn’t really wanting a in cabinet style but that is what I’ve found. The only other consideration was what I listed above but that is on eBay and $1100 for shipping.
Model number below. Is this a good one?

That should be a good performer. It has the "power module" system that Whirlpool added, which was an improvement over Hobart's design.
Vintage stuff does show up in the greater SF Bay and Sacramento areas if those are accessible to you. You just have to keep checking craigslist, FB marketplace (I don't do FB but it's a popular classified option) and if you're on Nextdoor, the "for sale and free" listings there are often where the best deals can be found. |

Not sure where you're located but Sacramento and the Bay Area are prime areas for machines like this if you're not located too far north or deep in the mountains. These were all over Craigslist 10-15 years ago but they're drying up at a very fast rate.
The 21+ machines only have one rinse so keep that in mind. Look for a KDS-19 or KDS-20 if you want to keep your water heater below `160F since they pre heat the water at each cycle and have 2 final rinses. KDS-18 does not preheat the water on any cycle except the final sani rinse and requires 150F at the tap but has a 3 level wash system, provides 3 rinses, and also has a sani temp of 180F. |

Speaking of the Bay Area, here's a free KDS17A to hold you over.

Dan,
Thank you!! I’m a little late back here and missed the KDS. Think I found one on FB, did have the other one delivered 🤷🏼♀️. I’m new collecting vintage appliances, but so far have the Dishwasher, two Chambers, a set of 1968 Maytag washer/dryer, and still on the hunt for more. Feel free to email me if you see another dishwasher or anything else! Would love a lighted back Maytag set! |

Hello! I’m also in Northern California and have a beautiful KDS-18 (Superba) if you’d be interested?
